A Change of Pace

WhenIwoke up Monday morning a strong feeling of anxiety came upon me.I quickly got up and headed to the bathroom in preparation of the day ahead of me. After i went downstairs and ate breakfast while mymom made lunch for Ace and Casey.

"So Jessica what do you think your first day will be like?" my mother asked while still making my brothers sandwhich.

"Well mom i think it will be like any other day of school," I said taking in my last bite of eggs.

"Do you think you will make any new friends?" she asked smiling. this normally meant she wanted me to get a boyfriend, but i know she didnt want to just say that.

"Of course i will but none that will catch my interest." I said getting up grabbing my bag and heading out, "I will tell you all about it today when I get home."

"Okay sweetie have a nice day." she waved at me.

I ran out the door to meet the bus that was pulling up in front of the house. I wasn't quite sure what my day would be like but for my sake i hoped it went good. As I got on the bus I scanned looking for Aaron who I found at the back wearing a blue button down shirt and black jeans. His sense of style has always made me wonder if he was from a different planet. I walked slowly to where he was and say down next to him.

"You look like you saw a ghost back here," he said in a low voice.

"No I just cant believe that its the first day of school already," I said pushing my brown hair behind my ear.

"Well at least we made it to the 10th grade right," he replied

"Yea sure I guess." i said

The ride to school was the least of my problems now. As I jumped off the bus and headed to the cafeteria for oreintation Jenny Wilde stopped right in front of me. She was the only female in the school that knew everybody business and couldn't keep it to herself if she got paid to.

"Hey Jess I heard you were the new president this year so what you have planned for us?" she asked in a smart tone.

"I dont tell secrets unlike other sophomores I know." I retorted with a smile.

I guess she didnt really agree so instead of saying anything she just walked into the cafeteria and sat down with her snobby friends. Jenny has been my rival since the 3rd grade and she thinks she is better than me because her parents are rich and mine aren't,which can explain her attitude. I made my way to the table where Aaron was already making a fool of himself. I sat there for 30 minutes listening to the principal tell us about all the fun we will have this year. I believe that there is no such thing as fun in school if you have a controlling principal and rude teachers. After her speech she dismissed us to our homeroom class which ended after 20 minutes so we could find our 1st period classes. J.J. Renstle High School was the only school ever to have its own 9th grade center and courtyard in the whole state, but either way i still didnt enjoy being around all the constant yelling and fighting. I made my way to my 1st class of math 101 (actual name) and sat 2 rows from the teacher. I couldnt really concentrate on the work because Jason was in my class. His long black hair and bright blue eyes was enough to make me wanna float but i didnt. He was the only 10th grader on the football team and he made captain his 9th grade year. I focused hard on the board and him at the same damn time which was causing friction in my mind.

"Jess do you have an extra pencil?" he asked breaking my trance.

"Um, s-sure Jason" I said pulling a pencil from my bag.

As I handed him the pencil i stared hard at his super muscular arm that was reached out towards me. I have always had a crush on him. I wanted to tell him but i always decided to wait for the right moment. To me that moment will be never.I was thrown from my thoughts by the school bell dismissing us from class. I walked slowly towards the door of the class when a hand pulled me back.I assumed it was my teacher but when i turned around I was face to face with Jason.

"Here is your pencil back and thanks for letting me use it." he smiled as he handed me my pencil and walked away.

I had no other words to say to him. I knew that i was gonna find out that silence is not always best, but i didn't know when. My next two classes went by pretty quick and when lunch came I was not ready for whjat would happen next. I walked to the cafeteria with a stern look on my face and nothing on my mind but going home. As I entered the cafeteria and got in line I felt someone push me from behind. At first I thought it was Aaron playing games with me, but unfortunately it was Jenny trying to get in front of the line and i was not about to have that.

"Excuse you Jenny but dont you have somewhere else to be besides tryna be somebody mama?" I asked sharply.

"Yea of course I do with Jason." she said in a smug tone.

I didnt have time to argue or reply when Aaron ran up to me and told me that he had my food so I wouldnt have to deal with queen snob. I quickly got out the line and followed my distraught friend who was seated with the basketball team. Aaron has always been popular he just never bragged about it too much unless he was trying to impress the girls that sat at our table.Lunch ended quickly and forced us to our last 2 classes of the day. I couldnt wait to make it home so I could tell mom about the boring day I had. Little did I know that my next class would change that. I walked into my Biology class only to find out that the students i was in there with were all upperclass students (juniors and seniors). Now when I say we had "invasions" this year i meant the upperclassmen and this was not what i wanted to experience. While I sat down in my seat a senior by the name of Freddie Swang jumped into the seat next to me.

"Hey whats your name?"

"Jessica"

"Oh cool mines is Freddie, Freddie Swang."

"Nice to meet you, um is there anything I can help you with?"

"Yea sure Im wondering if you believe in vampires?"

I was immediatly caught by surprise by his question.

"U-um not really but i have heard some stories about them."

"Well did you know that half the population of the school is vamipires and that they are hiding out till the right time has come for them to attack?"

"Oh really and is this a myth that the upperclass has come up with to scare the new comers or is it some joke that yall have convinced yourselves of?"

"No its true," he relped turning around in his seat.

For the rest of the day i didnt stop thinking about what Freddie told me in class. I wanted to believe what he said but at the same time I couldnt help but wonder if I was the crazy one or was he. I waited on the las bell to let us go home and when it came a feeling of relief came upon me. I got on the bus and say quietly while Aaron told me about the rest of his day. When I got home I went to my room and started on my homework. I was halfway finished when my brother Ace knocked on the door for dinner. At the table my dad was telling us about a client he was with today. When he finished I decided to ask the one question I was dreading today.

"Dad are vampires a myth?" I asked

"Huh? What made you ask me that?" he asked me.

"Well in class today this guy named Freddie asked me if i believe in vampires."

"They are not a myth however you won't  find any in this state." he answered with a smile.

My question time was over. I finally noticed that i was shaking at the thought of vampires at my school. I hurried with my dinner and laid down in my bed with alot of questions on my mind. That night my dreams consisted of vampires, school, and my throat. I woke up multiple time in a sweat . I got up washed my face laid back down and made myself go to sleep.
