Becky xxChapter 20
Revelation
For a long, agonising moment, Maryssa just stared at me, utterly stunned. I saw a whole string of emotions play out upon her face. Shock, anger, pain, disgust. And then she smiled and started laughing. That high, evil laugh that had been ringing through my head since the first time I heard it.
"This is a joke," she said between bursts of hostile giggling. "You think you can trick me? I've never heard anything so absurd in all my life."
"It's not a joke," I replied, trying to remain as calm and firm as possible. "We're in love, Maryssa. And we're going to be together."
I looked at Kye. He was standing beside Keiko who was still hanging limply like a puppet with cut strings. I could tell he was mentally weighing up the potential danger of our honesty, but it was too late now. I'd made a choice on the spot and there was no going back.
"It's true," he finally said, walking toward me and taking my hand. Tightly. "Lennon is the reason I came to the land. It's got nothing to do with Keiko, she just got caught up in this by being Lennon's friend. But I don't love her... I love him." He glanced at me, a whole ocean of feelings in his dark eyes. "I have for a long time. It's always been Lennon."
I felt butterflies. It was ridiculous. I was being threatened by a sea witch and my best friend was under her spell, but I felt butterflies. A whole swarm of them, fluttering in my stomach.
Maryssa took in our interlocking hands, all the colour draining from her cheeks. "This can't be true. You're purposefully trying to confuse me. I followed you underwater Kye, I saw you by that grotto listening to her."
"Listening to me," I corrected. "Who's always with Keiko at the grotto? You've been looking at the situation completely wrong. So set Keiko free. She's innocent in all of this. I'm the one you should be angry at. I'm your rival, Maryssa."
I knew my taunts were a bad idea. I knew they would stir up trouble. But at that moment, I needed to do something, anything, to deflect her power away from Keiko and onto me instead. I owed my best friend that much after everything I'd put her through.
"I don't understand," Maryssa answered, her voice a panicked whisper. She threw herself at Kye, clinging to his neck, forcing her to look into her spellbinding eyes. "This isn't just a crush on a human, it's a crush on a boy. It's not possible. I refuse to believe it."
Kye loosed his grip on me in order to push her away. "Well, it's the truth, whether you believe it or not."
She staggered back, a snarl forming on her lips. "But all my work has been to throw you off Keiko... I gained her trust... I made her ugly to spite you. I won't accept it's all been for nothing. I know you have feelings for her, it's why you ran here. It's why you've come back to me. Because now you realise... You realise she isn't right for you. It's me you want. We're going to go back to the sea and get married."
