An introvert. That was the best and simplest way to describe yourself. From being young, you had always been reserved, keeping to yourself and not mixing well with others. It had never really bothered you (being alone was better than being with others) and the thought of mixing with large crowds always made you feel like you were suffocating. Lately, however, it felt like you were constantly drowning in your own thoughts, unable to voice them to anybody. Being reliant on yourself only was something you were always proud of, but now it felt like you needed somebody, a friend, to pour out your feelings to.
On the first Monday morning back after the Christmas break, you walked to school. Sadly, the school was your favourite place to be. Your parents didn't care about you much- they just went to work, came home, cooked dinner and went to bed. As someone who was unable to speak to others well, your parents were really the only other people you could talk to about your concerns. But they didn't want to hear it. As long as you went to school and came back home they barely spoke to you.
The ice-cold air felt like blades on your skin as you made your journey to school. It was refreshing. Once you entered the large gates, you smiled, making your way to your locker. You kept your head down, not wanting to have to greet the large crowds of students that were all shouting over at one another after being apart for a few weeks.
Once you reached your locker, you opened it, a small piece of paper falling from it onto the floor. You gently picked it up, curiosity evident on your face. It had been folded up, with a small heart on the front.
'Hi Y/N! Just wanted to tell you that you should smile more. It's beautiful.'
The words were written neatly on the paper, that was decorated with little hearts. As the words sunk into your head, you felt a burning blush spread across your cheeks and you couldn't stop yourself from smiling. Even though you had grown up with these people, you had always been invisible around them. You couldn't complain: being ignored was better than getting attention. You felt you were lucky that you could go about your day unnoticed, and that also meant you never had any trouble with bullying either.
However, you couldn't just accept that the note was genuine. In your mind, it seemed more likely that you had been noticed by someone for the wrong reason. It seemed like they were trying to mess with you. But to the boy who watched as you looked at the note, it seemed like you really did have the most beautiful smile in the world.
You had almost forgotten about the note from the previous day until you opened your locker on Tuesday to yet another one. It was the same handwriting.
'I hope you know how amazing you are.'
It was only a small, simple sentence, yet it still made your heart beat like crazy. Folding the note back up, you slipped it into your backpack with the first one before going to class. The day went on as usual, with you staying at the library after school until it closed. As soon as you got home you went straight to your room and found a small box that you could keep the notes in. Some people would just throw them away; you, on the other hand, felt the need to keep them in case you ever wanted to read them. Maybe they'd give you strength when you needed it.
3 weeks later you had 15 notes, one for each day you were in school. You had been putting them in your box, keeping it on your desk. You almost felt reliant on the small pieces of paper.
Especially on one Saturday night, when your mum had been drinking. She came into your room when you were completing an assignment, opening draws and looking around. Soon enough she opened the lid of the box you had been treasuring so much, taking out the paper and reading them out loud.
