IT WAS A FEW DAYS BEFORE SCHOOL LET OUT and a few days before Audrey Ono was sent on a bus to Southeast Illinois University to spend the first third of her summer at cheer camp. She was savoring her last days of freedom. It's not like cheer camp was horrible, it was just that she'd rather spend her summer eating carbs, doing internships, making money, and watching tv. Three weeks of micro greens and mini marathons were making her seriously regret ever joining the squad.
The future seniors had a yearly tradition of having a bonfire down at the lake before junior year ended. It was a way to let off steam before the school year ended but also a way to start the summer off with a bang. Audrey hadn't plan to go, having to catch up on some busy work for her AP Chemistry class, but Carly and the girls had insisted.
So there she was, sitting on top of a cooler in a little circle with her cheer friends.
She had to admit that it was nice just talking about simple things like how everyone was looking forward to cheering this summer and drinking wine coolers by a fire. Girl talk was better than chemistry and Audrey was glad Carly made her come tonight.
"So, are you guys psyched for cheer camp or what?" Carly asked the group of girls with an excited grin on her face.
Unlike Audrey, Carly actually loved cheering and did it because she wanted to. She was apparently the only freshman of her class to make it to the varsity squad and had been cheering since she was in elementary school. She was dedicated to the sport and spent every waking moment trying to take their team to the top.
"Are you kidding? It's, like, all I can think about." Bianca nodded as she subtly made her way closer to Angela.
"Know how Martin Luther King had a dream? Well, I do too. To kick ass at cheer camp! And if that makes me shallow, then fine. Call me and Dr. King Shallow."
Audrey stifled a laugh at the girls commentary before having to full on face the other way when Bianca made a not so subtle pass at the curly haired girl. It was so obvious she was in love with her, but Audrey wasn't going to be the one to tell Angela that.
"Well, we at least have to do better than last year." Audrey commented as she twirled a piece of her long black hair that was coming out from under her beanie.
"We could take a dump in our pants and still do better than last year." Sylvia backtracked at the strange looks she was receiving. "I'm just saying."
"But, we're better this year!" Carly exclaimed. "Audrey's been working on her tumbling and she's actually gotten a lot better plus we've all been working on our flying. I honestly think we've got a real shot."
