Chapter Two

"Harold, love, are you ready?" My mother called from down stairs. My frown deepened when I heard her shrill voice. Why must I dress so nicely for this? It's rather silly, it's only a birthday—might be my sixteenth but it really isn't that important. Well, at least not important enough for me to be wearing this ridiculous tuxedo. I let out a long sigh, and quickly adjusted my bow tie.

"I'm coming mama!" I called. I checked myself over in the mirror once again, then rushed from my room. Mother was standing at the bottom of the staircase with a grin that was far too big to fit her small face. It was an effort to smile back at her. There was so much anxiety in this situation. With each step I went down I could feel my chest tightening up even more. I know what this party is for, and it's definitely not my birthday.

Well, it was but it wasn't.

At the bottom of the stairs mother immediately gripped my arm. Another smile, this one made me feel sick. I looked away and let her drag me to the ball room. The crowded, loud ball room. This was my least and most favored room. During parties like this: I hated it. Too many people, too many sounds, just way too much stimulation. It made me uncomfortable.

But, there were times where I loved this room. When it was dead silent during the day, and it was easy to sit down and read next to gigantic windows. The light always made the chandelier that dangled from the ceiling glimmer in the most beautiful way. The whole room would light up in its bright gold color, while the glass on the chandelier seemed to have little rainbows inside of it. Most of the time I'd find myself getting distracted by the colors in the glass, usually I'd just put the book down and stare.

I found myself looking up at that chandelier, and it reflected my feelings for this room right now. Dimly light, and with gross color barely lighting anything in the room. I assume that's why all the wall lamps were turned on too, so this wouldn't look like a funeral.

"Oh, Harry!" Oh Jesus. I turned around with a fake smile plastered on my face-per the usual. I felt my mother slightly elbow my side, telling me the smile clearly look uncomfortable.

"Hello Maddie, very nice to see you." she giggled rather loudly, and I half expected to gag. But, then again, I'm a very polite person.

"Of course it is," did she mean that coyly or? "I just wanted to say happy birthday to my handsome man." Hers? My eyes went wide and I looked over to my mother who was smiling widely. I felt her lips press to my cheek, and I couldn't help to be grossed out by the fact that her lips came anywhere near my face. I've had friends that are girls kiss or touch my face before, but her touch repulsed me period.

"Well, uh, thank you. Um, look Eleanor in over there! I just have to say hello, excuse me." I rushed away from the conversation to the other end of the ball room. I wasn't exactly lying when I said Eleanor was here, but I didn't have to say hello immediately. Eleanor and I have been friends since we were in diapers, she knows more about me than my journal. And that's saying something.

I tapped her on the shoulder despite the fact she was talking to a very attractive-no, not now. She turned to me with annoyed eyes that quickly melted away into happiness.

"Hazza!" She said excitedly, and I smiled at the nick-name and opened my arms or a hug which she aggressively went in for. The person she was previously talking to cleared their throat and mumbled something about needing the loo. We both didn't exactly care and pulled away to look at each other. If I do say so myself, she looked rather stunning in a short, sleeveless red dress that had a little bit of frill at the bottom. Her curly brown hair framed her face perfectly, and fell past her shoulders flawlessly.

"The man of the hour!" She said excitedly. I scoffed, rather loudly if I do say so myself (mainly because the group of five snobby men I've never even met glared at me. You weren't even invited. Mind burn). Eleanor rolled her eyes. "You don't think any of this is exciting? You're getting older! It's you're party! And you know, the night you're supposed to-" I shushed her and grimaced.

"God, don't remind me about that. I don't want to go through with it and you know that." Eleanor sighed. She pitied me at least, everyone else thinks it's my duty as a part of this family or that I want to do this. I'd kill myself if I wanted to do this. No, I'm not overly dramatic. It's a logical response in this case.

Eleanor looked vaguely across the room. She hates looking at people when she's upset, shes always looked away when she has to say something she doesn't want to. "That's life I guess," she gulped. "Being forced into dumb ass things that you never wanted." She looked back at me and tried to smile but I could see the tears beginning to form in her eyes. The tears she's held back for so long. She never cried once when I came to her crying about this. She was always strong for me, but it's my turn to be strong for her.

I opened my arms and she almost fell into them. People around this took this as a romantic gesture and immediately 'awed' at us. I hate them for that because that just made her more upset. I hugged her tighter and whispered "At least we'll get to annoy each other for the rest of our lives." She pulled away slightly and smiled a little.

"That was going to happen either way curly." she looked down "I just never wanted to annoy you as your wife."

"I didn't either."
