The Past Hurts

The late summer breeze whipped around Y/N's hair. Her bangs flopped into her eyes as she bent down to plant sunflower seeds in the earth. Cowlicks got in her mouth and she spat them out angrily. This had been happening all day and she was sick and tired of it. It had been a bad day and this was the final straw. Y/N had tripped on a stone and scraped her hands on the rough ground, her old boots were falling apart at the seams and she knew she had to replace them soon, and she had forgotten to eat all day.

Y/N threw down her seeds and headed inside. She forcefully opened the door and hastily made her way to the bathroom. Grabbing a hairbrush, she ripped it through the windswept mess. "Ow!" she muttered as she pulled through knots.

"Is everything ok?" she heard. Spinning around she saw Harvey in the doorframe. Y/N put down the brush as tears filled her eyes.

"Yes, everything's fine," she whispered. Y/N knew she was acting overly sensitive and it was nothing to cry over. She wiped her eyes and tried to sneak past her loyal boyfriend. He softly grabbed her shoulder and pulled her into a hug.

"Bad day, huh?" he said into her hair. Y/N nodded, still sniffling. "Let me help, go sit in the dining room." She slowly made her way into the dining room and Harvey followed, hair tie in hand. "Sit on the floor," he told her.

"Why?"

"You'll see," he told her. She did as he said, and he pulled up a chair behind her. She rested against his knees as his fingers combed through her hair. He started separating pieces and weaving them.

"Are-are you braiding my hair?" Y/N asked.

"Yes."

"Where did you learn that?"

"I taught myself when... well, when my mother was very sick. When I was in high school my mother was diagnosed with an illness. No doctors were able to diagnose what it was. She became very weak. Too weak to even comb her hair. It started to get matted. My mom always loved her hair, and it made her sad to see it filled with knots and mats. I taught myself to braid so I could do her hair for her. I wish I could have done more for her before she passed..." Harvey's voice started to tremble as he spoke. Y/N listened, eyes starting to tear up. "I vowed to myself that I would become a doctor to help others like her. Those doctors never cared, they didn't even care enough to make her comfortable in her final days. That's why I'm a doctor now." Harvey quieted down.

"There. All done." Harvey said quietly, ending the braid with a hair tie. Y/N stood up and lunged into Harvey's arms.

"I had no idea about your mom. I'm so sorry," Y/N whispered into his ear.

"It's alright. It made me the person I am today. If I wasn't a doctor, I wouldn't be in Pelican Town, and then I wouldn't have met you," he replied, hugging her harder. Y/N stood up suddenly and rushed to the bathroom. Looking in the mirror she smiled. A perfect braid laid across her shoulder. Harvey came up behind her and kissed her cheek.

Sometimes, the past hurts, but it makes us the people we are today. Remember this. Cherish this.
