"Someone once told me that none of us are actually scared of the dark; we're scared of what of it conceals from us."

"You're going to be a wonderful, intelligent girl one day, Alice." Her father whispered to her, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear as he kissed her forehead.

Alice giggled, reaching up and taking her father's hands. She squeezed gently as she stepped onto his feet, moving and wrapping one of her arms around him.

"Dance, papa!" She cheered, another laugh falling from her lips. Claude chuckled at her excitement, beginning to waltz around the library.

"Your mother will kill me when she finds out how late I'm letting you stay up." He laughed softly. "Aren't you tired, Alice?"

"No, papa." She responded, though it was a lie. Claude chuckled and picked her up, carrying her into her room.

"Well, how about I read to you?" He laid her in her bed. "I happen to know where your favorite book is, Alice." He told her.

"Yes, papa." Alice yawned and moved over a little, allowing her father to sit next to her once he had the boom.

Claude quietly sat and read to her, not forcing her to go to sleep. He could hardly deny her anything. The smile that had been placed on his lips widened when he sensed the presence of Alice's mother in the doorframe, and when he looked up from the book, his only child was asleep. He kissed her forehead and stood, quietly walking out to greet his wife.

"Did she just fall asleep?"

"What can I say?" Claude whispered, leaving the bedroom door cracked. "She's just like her mother; full of energy and impossible to say no to." He whispered.

Alice dreamed of her parents, the two happy in a ball room, dancing their problems away. Deep down, she knew they weren't as happy as they seemed. She awoke later that night, in the early morning during a storm. She was shaking and trembling, tears making their way down her cheeks.

She got up to find her parents. She wandered to their room, quick to notice that the two weren't there. She wandered down the stairs, crouching in the platform halfway down when she heard them. They were fighting, but she couldn't tell what us was about. Her mother was in tears, screaming at Claude to get out.

And without hesitation, he left, leaving his wife and child behind to bare for themselves.
