Akane Amane watched the smart screen at the front of the room, her eyelids slowly drooping. A headache pounded softly at the centre of her skull.
The man on the screen was demonstrating the science experiment her class would be doing next lesson, his over the top joyous voice piercing her ears.
The bell for the end of class rang and Akane dragged herself up, exhaustedly hauling her laptop and folder from the desk.
Akane yawned and rubbed her eyes. The night before, she'd woken up in a cold sweat, the nightmare flashing before her eyes.
She'd dreamt of suffering and screaming, raging fire tormenting the earth.
It was typical, but she'd dreamt of the end of the world.
It wasn't out of the ordinary, only because she'd had the exact same dream every night for 3 months.
Akane pushed the thoughts from her mind, not wanting her nightmares to enter reality. School
wasn't the place to enter her 'mind palace'.The headache that had been distracting her in science was back, the pounding in her head more forceful and painful than before.
Akane rubbed at her head and changed direction, aiming for the water fountain. Hydration was sure to dampen her migraine.
She reached the fountain and leaned down, pressing the button on the side to activate the steady stream of water.
The liquid instantly turned the headache into a low pulse, a bitter sweet relief from the awful banging before.
Suddenly, Akane reeled back, the headache forming into a mind shattering thrum. She gasped out loud, the pain so intense she lost her breath.
She felt hands on her back, her arms, shuffling her away. She saw the frightened faces of students, people she knew, their eyes wide and fearful.
Akane felt herself being laid down on something plastic and cushion-like. The bed in the infirmary.
A warm hand touched her forehead and she winced. She heard voices, fast quips in Japanese. She could hear so many voices.
Akane moaned, clutching her head. The pounding had become almost unbearable, so much Akane felt like ripping her brain out to make it stop.
"This will hurt just a bit, okay?" the nurse said in Japanese. Before Akane could protest, a needle was jabbed into her skin, pain lancing up her arm.
She screamed, ripping the needle out. Except, not with her hands.
No, the needle was floating above her, it's sharp point glinting under the ugly lights. Akane looked to the nurse, her face contorted in utter fear. Akane glared at her and forced the needle towards her. The nurse screamed just as the tip wedged itself in her throat.
Akane panted, staring at what she'd just done.
She'd killed her. Killed her.
She swallowed her vomit and ran for the door, eager to escape before someone found her or the nurse.
Akane burst into the hall, quickly looking write for anyone who was in the way of her potential warpath. The coast was clear and Akane races for the door.
She was stopped by Jin, the school's champion hockey player and also biggest asshole. He smirked down at her, using his height to his advantage.
"Where do you think you're going, little one," he scoffed, one brow tilting up.
"Get out of the way," Akane seethed. She felt her headache coming back, travelling from the back of her mind to the front.
"What are you gonna do?" he taunted. Akane felt the air around her shake, her anger sizzling around her.
The lockers to her left began to levitate and Jin looked like he was going to piss himself. Akane hurled the lockers at him, stopping short of crushing him.
"Move," she snarled, the voice coming out of her not entirely human. Jin went paler than he already was, running down the hall.
Akane let the lockers drop and swooped past them, the doors opening on her will.
And she was met with a swarm of police cars.
