Shocking Situations

I'm standing on one of Stark's private planes, bouncing a little on the tips of my toes. Coulson just called and said 'we have a weird signal coming out of a biochem lab in Colorado.' Very specific, Coulson, thanks for that. I hear a soft laugh behind me and turn. Bucky stands by one of the windows, watching me.

"You nervous?" I roll my eyes.

"Not really. It's just the last few times we had a 'weird signal' coming from somewhere, Loki shows up and destroys half of Manhattan, we almost lose a member of our team due to some weird Chituari illness, and then Loki shows up again, heading straight for you, then kidnaps an agent and turns her into some kind of receptor for this weird sword thing that's about as strong as Mjolnir and turns her into some irrational killing machine when she gets the tiniest bit upset. So I'm not nervous, I've just had enough life or death experiences to last me a lifetime and then some." He stares at me for a few seconds and then laughs. I smile; hearing him laugh is a new thing for me.

"I've never heard you talk that much. Like ever." We always were about business. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Get in, kill, get out, report back to base, and get our memories wiped... over and over again, the same routine. We never talked, which is why 98% of the stuff I know about Bucky comes straight from Steve. Which I do not recommend... You'll be sitting in one spot for 3 freaking hours while Steve tells you everything about his best friend. Which, don't get me wrong, it's nice to see Steve happy... But his happiness comes at a great price. Even JARVIS got annoyed about it, and it's really really hard to annoy JARVIS. Actually, it's hard to annoy anyone who's lived with Tony for an extended period of time. "So. How come I get to come on the fun trip?"

"Umm... Not sure. Coulson wanted you to come."

"That's weird. I was under the impression he didn't like me that much." I didn't either. But then again, Coulson's not Steve, so...

"Maybe he wants to give you a chance." He shrugs. "Oh, hey, I wanted to talk to you. Coulson made it seem like the signature he was getting emulated the Chituari situation we had a little while back. Anything metal was affected." I see him tense a little. "Not bad, it just, kind of... um... exploded. So maybe you should stay back until we figure out what it is." He's just about to answer me when my phone rings.  I sigh and pick up.

"Kat. You almost here?" I shift over to the window and glimpse mountains to the west.

"Yes, Coulson we're almost there, and yes Bucky's here."

"Good. I want to put him on some trial missions before we decide anything. This seemed like a good one."

"This one's dangerous, Coulson. Anything bad happens, you're the one I'm blaming."

"I don't think you're in a position to blame—"

"Oh yes I am. Anything bad, anything, I won't be very happy. Got it?"

"Yep. Now get here fast. Brin's getting restless." I hang up on him, rolling my eyes as I slip the phone into my belt. I quickly start going over my prelanding weapons check, Bucky doing the same on my left side. Everything seems to be in place, and I tense as the plane starts to descend. The plane doors open, and Coulson stands waiting for me. Silently, he hands me an earpeice and a contact. I slip both of them on, and am suddenly keyed into to Fitz's computer. Coulson waves Bucky after him, and we look at each other for a moment. Saying goodbye. Just in case. I slip out the door, pulling a black bag out the backpack by the door. Never know when you need a black bag to throw over someone's head. I start walking towards the 084, seeing Brin and Coulson pop up on the screen, heading in the same direction. I hear Coulson in my ear, asking me if I had brought the bag. Yes, Coulson. You saw me grab it. I have the bag.

"Yeah, why?"

"Change of plans." Walking out of the alleyway, I catch sight of a girl with wavy blonde hair, wearing a thin shirt. Great... It's a person.

"Phil, we need to grab her. Kat, go mobster on her." Hey, Brin gave me an order I'm happy to follow. I run forward and slip the bag over the girl's head as Brin zip-ties her wrists together. I pull my earphone out and leave Brin to take care of our 084. I search the bus quickly, finding Bucky sitting with Fitz. I sit next to him as Brin enters the room.

"Did ya get it?" Wow, Fitz is really excited about this...

"Yes, but it is a she." Wow, Coulson, you're being very obvious today aren't you? It's not like Brin's dragging an unconscious person behind her or anything.

"No. Is it like the Chitauri men? We still have some antiserum left." We do? I thought we used it all on Simmons... Whatever.

"We can't be sure Fitz. Brin, May, Kat, take her to the chamber. See if any metal starts floating." Roger that. We take the girl to the 'chamber', made entirely of pastic to deflect any and all electric blasts. We sit her down, and I lean against the wall, watching as May starts pulling out metal objects, each one falling to the ground.

"Emitting that size of field means she would already be magnetic. Apparently she is not Chituari." I could have told you that one, May. She looks nothing like the aliens I had the pleasure of fighting in New York. Brin turns towards us.

"Still, what could've made that kind of field May?" Good question kid. I'm wondering the same thing.

"I could knock her out." Bucky. I told him to stay outside. I'm going to kill him. I spin around to face him, arranging my face into a mask of neutrality.

"Bucky! I thought I asked you to stay outside?" Very specific instructions, Bucky, it's not that hard.

"Oh, come on Kat. You think I'm going to sit on the sidleines? No. I'm helping."

"But--" His eyes connect with mine, and I know what he's thinking. Last time he let me do the work, I nearly ended up dead. He's guilt tripping me. This totally isn't fair. "Fine. But if your arm explodes, don't blame me." Brin starts talking to May, but as luck would have it, my brain decides to figure out it hasn't given me all of my memories back yet, so hey, let's do it now. As soon as I manage to stop my brain's helpfulness,I hear Phil's voice.

"Do we even know if she can talk?"

"Uh, no Phil. She hasn't said a word." I'll get her to talk. I step forward, making sure she can see me.

"Can you talk? Cuz if you can, you have some explaining to do." She seems to take in a deep breath.

"What is happening? Where in the bloody hell am I?!" Great, we got a Scot. A more stubborn nationality never occurred.

"Guys she is spiking again." Fitz sounds panicky.

"Ma'am you are going to need to calm down." Good job, Phil, be the gentleman.

"Calm down, 'ow am I sup'sed to calm down?" Crap... When a Scot's accent gets stronger, that's bad. Very bad. Brin starts suggesting using an ICER, Couslon shoots it down, Fitz keeps yelling about calming her down, and I feel like chiming in.

"Please let me shoot her." All this yelling is making my migraine worse, and I'm having a really hard time concentrating on what anyone's saying. May slides in behind me and whispers authorization to use my ICER. Sweet. I mumble under my breath unconsciously, and I hear Bucky laugh beside me. I walk behind the girl, waiting. Everyone's still yelling, and at this point, my head hurts so bad I'm not entirely sure where I am. I lift the ICER and pull the trigger, watching the girl slump over. "I hate talking. You're welcome." I walk out of the room, hearing Fitz mention something about a monkey. Bucky follows me out, grabbing my arm.

"You OK?" I shrug, and his grip tightens just a bit. "Don't lie."

"I'm fine! My head hurts, that's all." He gives me a look that says we'll talk about this later and follows me to the holotable, where everyone is gathered. They're talking about the girls name, but I don't really care... I just want to lie down. Brin catches e as I go and congratulates me on shooting the Scot. Sweet. I've earned her respect. Bucky's walking beside me, and I start to black out, feeling him pick me up just before I slip into the darkness.
