I wake up to sunshine peeking through the blankets. I check my phone and see that it's only 6:30am. Great. I could've slept for another 30 minutes. I look to my right and see David still sound asleep. I resist the urge to poke him awake. I'm officially awake and I can hear the coffee machine calling out to me, so decide to get up. I'm quiet when going down the stairs so I won't wake up the kid. Once I'm downstairs I let Dolly out and I make myself a cup of coffee and grab one of the croissants left from yesterday. I sit down at the table and read the news on my tablet. Fifteen minutes later I hear David coming down the stairs. He walks into the kitchen and gives me a sleepy kiss on my cheek.
"Good morning honey."
"Good morning dear."
He grabs his breakfast and sits down on the other side of the table, doing God knows what on his phone. Probably checking some e-mails. He doesn't use that much social media.
We sit in silence for a couple minutes until he asks: "Don't we have to wake up Jake?"
"In a minute", I say.
"You want to come with me?", I ask a few minutes later as I stand up.
"Sure", he says.
We walk up the stairs and sneak into Jake's room. I light his dinosaur lamp and tickle his nose. Slowly he opens his eyes and tries to smile.
"Moooom", he yawns.
Laughing, David opens his curtains. They also have little dinosaurs on them. When Jake finally gets out of bed, things start to go faster. While David makes Jake's breakfast and his lunchbox while dressing himself, I try to get Jake and myself dressed at the same time. As I'm putting in my earrings I hear David's voice from the hallway.
"Go give mom a hug."
It's his turn to drive Jake to school. Five minutes after they left the house, I get in my car and drive to work. Seven hours of teaching classes and I'll get to see my two boys again.I pull up in the driveway and see the dog jumping from behind the hedge, and hear a little voice yell: "Mom is home!"
I smile and open the front door. I see David opening the door to the hall, Dolly jumps up against me and Jake runs to me for a hug. When I finally made my way to David, he gives me a kiss and smiles.
"Welcome home, love."
I sit down for a minute and pour me a glass of wine, then I start dinner. David takes Jake to the kitchen table and helps him with his homework, while Dolly is in her basket chewing on her toy.
"Can I go play now?", Jake asks when he and David finish his homework.
"Hold on a minute dear, dinner is ready", I say.
We eat and tell each other about our day. David had some trouble with a colleague, I had a difficult student and Jake scraped his knee. He doesn't seem to mind because he is very proud of his band-aid. He finishes his plate and is finally allowed to go play. I stand up with a sigh and start cleaning the table. David hugs me from behind and gives me a kiss in my neck.
"Let me do that, love."
Grateful I collapse on the couch and turn on the tv. About twenty minutes later he warns me that it's almost time to put Jake to bed. Together we take him upstairs. His dad reads him a bedtime story while I put on his pajama's. By the time David is finished, Jake is already half asleep. We give him a goodnight kiss, I light his lamp and quietly we leave his room. We walk to the bathroom. We're both too tired to shower, but we put on our pajama's, technically mine is just David's shirt, and we go back downstairs and watch tv, me with another glass of wine. Halfway through an episode of our favourite show on Netflix I feel his head resting against my shoulder and his breath getting slower.
"Let's go to bed", I whisper and I hear him mumble something in response. Together we walk up the stairs and get in bed, holding each other. We say goodnight and I feel h breath become steady. A little bit later I close my eyes too.
