After Maggie and I catch up, and I've calmed down, I pick up the bracelets and the princess doll. I go find Sammy. "Happy birthday," I say.
"Is it my birthday?" she asks confused.
"Well it's about your birthday. There's no way to actually be sure. But here." I say giving her the gifts. Her face lights up and she smiles from ear to ear. She throws her arms around me, whacking me with the doll in the process.
"Thank you! I love you Kaitlyn!" she squeals.
"Aw, I love you to, Sam." I say.
"Wow! Cool doll," says Mika. Sammy gives me a look.
"Off you go," I say to her. She runs over to to Mika and Lizzie, bracelets jingling. The love I feel for my little sister is indescribable. She is too sweet, too innocent, for all of this. I would do anything for her.
*FLASHBACK*
"The baby's coming!" Mum yells. We're at a rest stop, in the middle of nowhere.
"What? Now?" Dad panics. "You're not due for two more weeks."
"Tell that to the mini-you, fighting his way into the world." she almost screams at Dad. "Where's the nearest hospital?" she asks a man in front of us.
"It's about 20 miles that way dear. Are you in labour?" he asks. Such an obvious question.
"No. I'm just screaming because I fucking love rest stops!" even in labour, my mother is her usual sarcastic self. We get in the car. "I'm not going to make it!" she screams as my Dad speeds towards the hospital. My mum lets out another tearing shout. I turn around and see Sammy's head popping out.
"Dad! I see the head!" I shout. "My brother's coming." We were told that Mum was going to have a boy, and he was going to be called Samson. Dad had to pull over. After a lot of puffing, panting, breathing and yelling, Sammy was born there, on the side of the road while I held my mum's hand. I cut the cord with my dad's pocket knife.
When I held her, tears filled my eyes. I was only seven, but I knew what she ment to me. It was the most memorable day of my life. "Hello, I'm your big sister. I love you so much and I'll never let anything happen to you. I promise." I whispered to her. As I said this, a tear rolled down my dad's cheek and Sammy gripped my index finger like she'd never let me go.
*END OF FLASHBACK*
I haven't broken the promise that I made that day. And I don't plan to. I feel guilty for my sister being brought into the world in such an easy way, when Carl's mum died for Judith to be born.
I walk to the cafeteria and I see Carl. Before I think, I run to him. I throw my arms around his neck and smash my lips to his. I don't care who sees.
