Remembering
Throughout the week Jane continued to force herself into Jason's very bland lifestyle. She gave him rides home and sat with him during lunch. She only wished someone would have done this for her when she was in his shoes a few short years ago. Jason didn't mind the attention he was getting from Jane at all. A girl had never taken an interest in him or anyone for that matter. It was nice to finally have a friend that he could talk to.
On a regular Saturday morning, Jason did what he would do any other weekend. He sat in his pajamas watching random cartoons and eating some cereal. Suddenly the phones shrill ring, rang through the whole house. Not used to getting phone calls, Jason assumed it was for his mother and let her get it. A few seconds passed and his mother stood in front of him handing the phone towards him with a concerned look.
"Jane Phillips is on the phone for you.", She paused. "Want me to tell her your busy?", His mom asked obviously not wanting him to get on the phone with the notorious rebel of their small town.
"No it's fine, I'll talk to her.", He grabbed the phone from his shocked mother and walked outside. "What's up?", he asked. Over the week he has grown more comfortable and less awkward with Jane.
"Is the witch around?", she asked hesitantly.
"No I stepped outside. Why?"
"Because I have a proposition for you... That may have to do with something illegal.", She spoke slowly.
"Like what?"
"Well lets say there are some people that are asking for what their getting." Her cryptic talk was getting to Jason slightly.
"I hope you're not inferring that I'm going to help you murder anyone."
"Oh god no. It has a little something to do with a dozen or two of eggs and some cars. No big deal. Meet me at that small coffee place by your house in fifteen minutes." And with that she hung up leaving a ringing on the other end of the phone.
Fifteen minutes later Jason strolled into the coffee shop looking around for Jane. He soon found her sitting in the back with a black beanie over her lightly blonde locks and black sunglasses over her eyes.
"What's with the all black get up?" he asked her upon approaching the table she was sitting at.
"I thought this would be more exciting if we made it seem like a spy movie or some shit. Don't make fun of me." She warned as she took a gulp from her coffee mug. "Sit." She ordered him. "Now on to our order of business." She pulled out a notepad and a red marker. She scribbled the words 'Egg List' on the top of the page and numbered off to three. Jessica Ulson, Brad Hurst and Kaleb Warren. None of whom Jason was aware of.
"Who are these people?" Jason questioned.
"Let's just say they're not too nice of people." Jane replied looking off into the distance seeming to be remembering something.
"Okay, since I don't have a choice let's get this over with."
And with that they hoped in Jane's station wagon and headed to their first destination. As they drove the neighborhoods got nicer and nicer. They were now descending into the wealthy side of town. Jane turned onto a street where a huge black rustic gate blocked them from going any further. A security guard approached the car with a clipboard in his hands.
"Who are you here to see tonight?" he said in an impatient tone tapping his glove clad fingers on the clipboard.
"I'm afraid my English is not so well...I uhh..." Jane began in a thick Russian accent that was surprisingly accurate. "I am here for Ulson's I am maid" she said continuing to sound confused and like she struggled to speak the English language.
"And who's this?" the officer inquired gesturing towards Jason.
"This is my..." Jane hesitated, but not because of her act. Because she didn't know what to say.
"I'm her translator and I also help her clean for the Ulson's." Jason cut in quickly as to not make the officer suspicious.
"Okay carry on." The officer flagged them on and opened the gate for them.
Jane slowly pulled forward into the world of mansions and butlers. The neighborhood seemed to go on forever, the houses more extravagant than the one that preceded it. Finally Jane's station wagon screeched to a stop a ways down from their target. Quietly they stepped out of the vehicle and unnoticed slipped into the Ulson's front yard seamlessly. Jane slowly opened the carton that contained the eggs. The pair each grasped an egg in their eager hands and looked at the towering house in front of them. An unspoken que sent these two into a frenzy of egg throwing. One egg after the next flew hitting just about every area that they had access to. After about a minute or so of the egg throwing a light illuminated one of the upstairs windows and with that they bolted back to the getaway car. And off they went to the other two victims homes and commenced the same process, all ending successfully.
By the time their mission was complete it was about 2:30 am. So Jane drove to a divvy dinner that she had frequented throughout the years. It was a town favorite with its delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner. All of which were served all day every day. The pair sat down in a leather booth across from each other. The restaurant was vacant except for them so all that could be heard was the quite chatter of the kitchen crew and the sizzling of the grill.
"What would y'all like?", asked an older woman with fried blonde hair and bright pink lips. She seemed sweet with her southern demeanor.
"I'll have a coffee, the boy will have an orange juice and for food can you just surprise us?" Jane replied with a bright smile and handed the menus to the waitress who wore the name tag 'Trish'. This was the most happy Jason had seen her be.
"Okay I'll be right back." And with that she shuffled back to the kitchen leaving Jason and Jane alone once again.
They settled into a comfortable silence every once and awhile catching glances of each other while observing their surroundings.
"Why did we egg those people's houses? I mean I'm assuming they deserved it, but I just want to know what your beef with them is." Jason finally addressed the elephant in the room.
She took a deep sigh looking down at her hands that were waffled together and placed neatly on the table top. Her eyes never broke from looking at her intertwined fingers.
"Jason, I just don't think..." her voice drifted off like it was caught in a strong wind.
"What are you afraid of?" he asked bravely. After spending so much time with Jane he was able to hold his own with her.
"I just... I don't want to... open up and get my heart broken again." She finally spit out. Her eyes were beginning to look glassy as she looked out the window to the empty parking lot.
Jason slowly slid his hand across the table and gripped her cold and boney hands and gave them a reassuring stroke. This gesture meant more to Jane than any amount of words ever would.
"I'll start from the beginning I guess...."
