The next morning Mac awoke super early and got dressed and ready in a hurry. She left a note on the kitchen table explaining that she would be back in a few hours, Mac burst out into the open and scooped up her spear. She sharpened the head and set off quickly but quietly into the dense forest.
Mac ran and felt as free as the birds that chirped happily above her head, the sky was dotted with blobs of clouds but apart from that the sky clear. She ran on with her hair flowing behind her and laughed to herself. Mac was a skilled hunter but never let anyone know that she was handy with a spear, not that there was anyone to tell but she wasn't keen on letting people know nevertheless. She came to a halt beside a tall oak tree and dug her feet into a small hole near the base of the tree, Jake called her a monkey sometimes because of her fast nimble climbing. Mac smiled to herself and pushed up to the top most branch where she had a clear view of her surroundings, nothing but thriving green tree tops and somewhere, dotted on the horizon was the black smog of the city.
Mac jumped down from a lower branch of the tree, she hadnt yet found anything to kill with her spear and she frowned. 'Its just gonna have to be plants for breakfast,' she smiled to herself and knew her younger brother would sulk at the thought of having to eat something not so yummy. 'Oh well, atleast we have water and plants...' Mac had stopped dead in her tracks, she had the feeling something was watching her as she walked on through the woods. She stole a look over her shoulder, blue eyes wide with fear, she broke into a run with her grip tightening on her spear. Mac's chest heaved as she struggled to breathe, asthma. Dread washed over her, she had to stop running soon, she skidded to a stop and sunk down the trunk of an old sicamore tree. She gasped for air and shakily stood, she tried to stay as silent as she could but it was barley possible due to her wheezy breathing. A couple of moments passed and Mac had calmed, but her knuckles remained white due to her tight grip on the spear.
Mac dared not move as she remained with her back glued to the trunk of the tree. Something was approaching her, walking up behind her. If this was the end, what about Jake, what about mum? Mac exhaled and went to take a step, someone grabbed her from behind and thrust their hand over her mouth, she let out a muffled scream until the person stomped on her feet. Mac had dropped her spear and was now being led deeper into the woods, what was her fate going to be? What was going to happen to her brother and her mum?
But do not stress, your questions will be answered soon enough.
