It was a lazy Sunday afternoon. Sam had gone out to visit Nathan at the orphanage leaving me to spend the day by myself. The apartment was small so there wasn't much to do apart from sit and watch tv while I waited for him to get back. Me and Sam had been dating for about a year now but it seemed like I'd known him forever, everyday spent with him was like a dream. All of our problems seemed to disappear when we were together. I was so lucky. Most of the time when I wasn't with him I would spend thinking about him. He was my world and I was his.
Bang!
The sudden sound of the apartment door being shut more forcefully that usual turned my attention from the TV.
"Sam?" I called, knowing that he was the only other person with a key. He walked quickly past me and into the bedroom "Sam what's wrong?" I asked as I followed him, sensing the unfamiliarity in his actions. His flustered face was covered in sweat and he was frantically collecting all of his clothes that were dotted around the room from the nights that he stayed over. "Sam what's going on? What are you doing?" I continued to question him, confused by his actions but he still didn't look at me. "Sam. Sam talk to me!" I shouted getting frustrated at his unwillingness to talk to me. My change in tone caused him to stop for a second and face me. I could see the worry in his eyes.
"(Y/N) please don't make this any harder than it has to be." He said struggling to keep eye contact with me. I could feel the anger bubbling up inside of me, I just wanted to know what was going on.
"Sam what are you talking about?"
"I have to go." He said plainly as he continued to pack.
"Go? Go where? Sam your not leaving! Your not leaving me!" I said as I grabbed his arm and turned him to face me and I could see the hurt in his face. "Sam listen to me, whatever you've done we can work it out. You don't have to run." I said softly, trying my best to understand what was wrong, but he just shook his head and went back to it. Trying my best to hold back my tears I continued to try to get him to listen. "Listen if it's shoplifting again or anything like that it's ok we can figure it out Sam just please tell me what's going on I can help y-"
"It's not shoplifting okay?" Sam said in a slightly angry, slightly upset tone, as if he was trying not to lose his temper.
"Then I don't understand wha-" My heart sunk. He couldn't have. Could he? "Sam... you didn't kill anyone. Did you?"
No response.
"Sam!" I took his arm again to make him listen.
"I-it's not like that." He finally replied.
"Then what is it like?" I pushed, with tears threatening to fall from both of our eyes.
Sam breathed in for a second before finally giving me an explanation.
"I snuck Nathan out of the orphanage, I surprised him and we broke into the place where I found all of Moms stuff. But then this old woman was there and she was sick. There was nothing we could do! S-she just died! And then the cops came and we ran but they saw us, they think we killed her. I can't stay here and risk Nathan getting caught and having his life ruined because of me I just have to get him away from he-"
Tears were now falling down both of our cheeks as I pulled him into a hug and stoked his soft hair.
"It's okay, it's okay" I reassured him, even though I knew that this was bad. Really bad. We stayed like this for a while. Neither of us wanting to let go. "I'll come with you." I said, pulling away to look into his tired face.
"No." He shook his head. "I need to know that your safe. And for now that means being far away from me." My heart sank and tears started streaming down my face. I couldn't believe this was happening. "Hey, hey." He said softly, with his hand on my face and looking deep into my eyes. "It won't be forever. I promise. I'll come back for you." He put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a locket with a picture of the two of us on our first adventure and placed it around my neck. That was my favourite picture of us. "So you don't forget what I look like." He said playfully.
"How could I forget a face as ugly as yours?" I joked in-between tears. Trying my best to show a smile.
"That's my girl" Sam smiled back placing a kiss on my head. "Listen I've gotta go, Nathan's waiting for me outside." A nod was all I could manage without bursting into tears again. My heart was breaking but I didn't want our last moments together to be spoiled by sadness. "But listen, it'll only be for a year and then I'll come back and we'll start a new life together. And hey, now I'll always be with you." He smirked as he poked the locket that was hanging around my neck. "But my god am I gonna miss you Princess" He sighed, tucking the lose hair behind my ear and pulling me into a deep kiss that I wish never ended. I rested my forehead against his and closed my eyes. "I'll miss you too Cowboy." I said through a smile holding back tears. And with that, he gave my head one last kiss and on his way out, shouted back one last "I love you" And as I watched him leave, I whispered back
"I love you too Cowboy."Hey! Sorry that this ones a sad one but I just felt like writing something soft.
Also I know Cowboy is Elenas nickname for Nate but I thought it was pretty fitting for Sam soooo..
