Hiccup's PoV:

"Alright, fine, Bud!" I yelled exasperated because Toothless was annoying me by begging to go for a midnight ride. I hopped off the bed and set down the notebook I was writing in. I went downstairs and out the door. My father was in a meeting at the Great Hall tonight. I mounted him and cooked my foot in the contraption that controls Toothless' fake tail wing and we sped off.

We flew almost halfway around the island and came to the foresty area when I saw it. It wasn't much, but in the dark of night it was very noticeable. A light. I squinted to see it better, but it didn't help. I nudged Toothless and said as I pointed in the direction of the light, "Let's go see what's over there." He grunted and we turned to go that direction. As we got closer I noticed that the light was flickering. 'It's a campfire!' I thought. We lowered to the ground and landed in a nearby clearing and I hopped off of Toothless.

I slowly crept to the camp with my hand ready to grab my knife and defend myself if I had to. But as I got closer I noticed to was a dragon laying there with a small fire by it. I thought it was strange that the dragon was by the fire and not laying on top of it like the other dragons sometimes do.

I crept around to see the front of the dragon. I was standing on the opposite side of the fire and that's when I saw the girl. She was tucked under the dragon's arm asleep. I took one step forward and crunched a small leaf. The dragon instantly shot its' head up and glared at me. It growled and it looked like it held its' owner closer. The girl shifted and mumbled something. The dragon looked down at her and nudged her awake with it's nose. She slowly turned around and sat up while rubbing her eyes. When she saw I was standing there with my hand above my knife strapped to my waist, she quickly grabbed her weapon that I guess she had slept with in her hand and jumped up. Her weapon was a small sword. It wasn't a knife or dagger size, but it wasn't incredibly long like a normal sword.

She stood there slightly shaking. Either she was cold, afraid, or something else. She had an almost threatening look on her face. It wasn't truly scary because she looked tired especially sine she just woke up from sleeping for possibly not a very long time. But when she spoke it was full of strength and boldness, "Who are you? Where did you come from? Who do you work for? Answer!" I took a step back and put my hands up as she walked closer and held the tip of her sword to my neck. I took a gulp before answering. Her tone of voice was what scared me the most. "My name is Hiccup Haddock the Third. I live in Berk that is just on the other side of this island. I don't work for anyone unless you count my father." She pointed her sword farther into my neck and asked, "Who is your father, Hiccup?" "Stoick the Vast. Leader of Berk. Why? Who were you hoping it was? Or wasn't?" She didn't answer my question, but she asked me another one instead, "So your father is only just the leader of...Berk...was it? He doesn't do anything else?" I thought that was a little strange, but still answered, "No. I mean yes! Yes. He is only the leader of Berk. He doesn't do anything else." She sighed and slowly lowered her sword from my neck but still eyed me suspiciously.

I rubbed my neck where her sword was and cleared my throat before asking, "So, why are you sleeping out here in the cold?" She didn't answer right away, but she did a few seconds later after she walked around me surveying me almost like she was deciding whether to trust me or not. Then she sat down on the ground and faced the fire. She looked up at me and then patted the ground next to her gesturing for me to sit. I did and looked at her. She was staring into the flames. "I was running." she said. I furrowed my eyebrows and asked, "Running? Running from what?" She didn't answer at all this time. All she did was pull her legs up and wrapped her arms around her knees and rested her head on her arms still staring into the flames. She seemed lost in thought. I waited a few more moments before asking a different question while looking over at her dragon circling Toothless and vice versa, "So, what's your dragon's name?" She lifted her head and smiled looking over at her dragon. "Her name is Kiana. It means divine and heavenly." I nodded and then I looked over at her and asked, "What's your name then?" She looked over at me and we made eye contact. I saw something in her eyes. I could tell she has a story hidden inside of her. I want to be the one to help her let go of it and to start a new story here on Berk. She stared at me and I at her for a few more moments before she replied, "My name...is Rayana."
