We sat with you in the waiting room,
You laid across our laps,
Your breathing deep and slow,
Ever so relaxed.
The drugs had masked your pain you see,
But you didn't have a clue,
You only needed to feel the love,
That flowed from us to you.
As we took that long short walk,
Into that little room,
Where the vet had laid your blanket,
Small comfort in that gloom,
I knew that this would be the last walk,
We would ever take,
And as the door clicked shut behind us,
I felt something inside me break.
We cuddled you more, we stroked your paw,
We held your staffy head,
Our tears felt like glue, as we laid with you,
On this makeshift bed.
The weight of your body on our weakened arms,
Was the outward sign of your inner calm,
So we laid your head down for the final time,
Looking deeply into your big brown eyes,
Whispering goodnight to our brave little boy,
We left really quickly, but I kept your toy,
To remind us of you, our devoted Red,
How much we will miss you, I cannot express.
