in this fic, jin is part of a crime family that smuggles + creates illegal weapons and technology which they sell to other gangs. jungkook is his security team. also I'm thinking jin has some sort of mild mind manipulation power? he uses it sparingly though. more on his backstory in chapters to come. side vkook

'took you long enough,' jungkook whispers angrily, crawling out from underneath the sofa. his face is shiny with sweat and there's a spider on his neck. jin almost feels sorry for him. almost.

'what was it you wanted to say?' he says. 'hurry up, I want to go to sleep soon.' jungkook glares at him.

'so did I, hyung,' he says, through gritted teeth. 'we would both be asleep by now if you didn't insist on interrogating your roommate for the past half an hour.'

'it wasn't half an hour,' jin protests.

'it was, I timed you,' jungkook retorts. jin doesn't argue. instead he does the thing (he still doesn't have a name for it).jungkook's eyes glaze over for a second, he sits down on the couch and rubs his neck. it's almost working when he finds the spider. his eyes shoot open and he yells, loud enough to be heard in the next building. it's kind of ridiculous. invincible golden boy jean jungkook is afraid of spiders. jin can hear yoongi's bed creaking, and he panics. he tackles jungkook and shoves him back under the couch. jungkook does not appreciate this, flailing and kicking with his full ten years of martial arts training. jin doesn't have the time to calm him down. yoongi's bedroom door opens a crack, and mercifully, he falls silent.

'hyung?' yoongi says sleepily, 'what's going on?'

'n-nothing,' jin says, 'why are you still awake?'

yoongi is annoyingly persistent. 'I know I heard something.'

jin realises he's still crouched on the floor. he also realises he can clearly hear jungkook's heavy breathing. 'you imagined it. from the trauma.'

'what trauma? there's no trauma,' yoongi says defensively. yoongi doesn't like being seen as weak. namjoon once called it a napoleon complex.

'of course not,' jin coos, 'yoongichi is so strong. go the fuck back to sleep.'

'but-'

'right now!'

yoongi stands in the doorway for a minute, because he's stubborn that way. he can vaguely hear him muttering something about being an adult, and that he can go to sleep whenever the fuck he wants. then he shuffles back inside and closes the door. jungkook pops his head out and gives jin a dirty look.

'why don't we talk outside?' jin says, offering jungkook his hand. jungkook slaps his hand away, pulling himself up, and follows jin into the balcony. it's three o'clock, stars blanketed in smoggy city darkness. it's cool and damp, and jin can smell rain. one of his favorite parts of the job is nights, especially the hours between midnight and dawn. jin is somewhat of an insomniac, and when he was a kid he'd lie in bed at night for hours, in the dark windowless room he was meant to sleep in, wishing he was doing something else. the world looks so different at night, but nobody sees it. the two of them stare at the vague outline of buildings in the dark for a while. then jin turns to jungkook.

strangely enough, now that they're alone now, and there's no one to hide from, jungkook is silent. he fidgets, pulling at his jacket sleeves and grinding his foot into yoongi's old cigarette stubs. jin waits.
