Chapter Nine

It had been three weeks, and Alina would still not speak to Connor. He would, however, approach her and ask her (More like harass her, in her opinion) about the articles, but she never told him anything. Sometimes Connor would find his things moving suddenly away from him (like his chair when he was trying to sit in it), but, as Alina’s control improved, he had almost no way to prove it was her because she didn’t move and barely even looked at him. Soon she was able to lift large objects without moving (Though she still preferred to use hand gestures) and her strength improved almost daily. On the other hand, she was unable to lift living things, or things that she could not see. There were exemptions from this rule. Once she had control over an objects she could sense where it was even if it disappeared from view, and if she knew exactly where something was, even though she couldn’t see it, she could still move it. (This was how she manipulated locks.) Coach Titan even admitted that she was the fastest student he’d ever had, and soon they switched her training from working with her telekinesis to working with her telepathic abilities. The worked on her strength against mental attacks as well as mind reading, and worked on it until she was able to tell if someone was lying by reading their mind.

Kaolin advanced steadily as well, though not as fast as Alina. She was able to bring her creations to life (as long as they were small) and force them to obey her, though she had yet to create another one with as much free will as her wolf. Most of her creations just wandered about aimlessly until she shut them down again. It was soon common to find little people and animals wandering around under the beds in the dragon dormitory until someone yelled at her to get rid of them. Kaolin said that she just couldn’t bear shutting them down.

“It just feels like killing them!” She told Alina one day.

“So what? You can bring them back to life!” Snapped Alina, who at that moment was trying (and failing) to lift the bleachers without moving.

Gage advance too, but her progress was hard to detect since she was already good to begin with. Now she could assume the forms of harder birds (such as emus and cassowaries) though she still preferred those that could fly.

Zack was also improving, but he joy of being able to actually sense and manipulate electricity himself was dimmed by the fact that Kaolin was still mad at him. Even Alina spoke to him occasionally, though she mostly just told him to leave her alone, but Kaolin was a different story. She didn’t even acknowledge his presence, which was a shame since he really enjoyed her company.

All four of them noticed that whenever they used a large amount of their powers, their eyes would change color. Alina’s went black, Kaolin’s turned silver, Gage’s lightened into a bright green, and one of Zack’s eyes turned green and the other blue. This was strange because they didn’t notice anyone else’s eyes changing, except for the principal’s, who’s eyes changed from blue to dark blue every time he teleported.

In gym they still worked on regular gym things like endurance and strength, but most of it was based on their talent. Connor, of course, just trained with strength. He still wouldn’t admit he had a talent. Soon the Coaches agreed that it was time for all of them to pick out a weapon. The class loaded into a large freight elevator in groups. Alina, Kaolin, Gage, Zack, and Connor were all in the first group. Surprisingly, Cassandra was with them. “Cassandra!” Kaolin exclaimed. Turning to Alina, she explained, “This is the girl who told me where to find you.”
