"So, what are you doing after school Erra," Naila asks, taking a bite into her turkey avocado sandwich. It was lunch time and Sierra and Naila were sitting at their table Sierra had designated for them ever since they started their friendship. No one was allowed to sit at the table unless they were worthy.
Sierra smiles at the foreign nickname, "That's a new one I've never heard before," she says, tossing her half eaten burrito to the side. "I'm going to do my homework and then going to look for a homecoming dress."
"But homecoming isn't until the end of next month. Don't you think it's a little too early? I mean, we did just start school today."
"The earlier the better Nai. Besides, I have to decide on a color, design, you know, all the main things."
Naila laughs, before saying, "Those are things you should worry about when prom comes, not for homecoming."
"Oh don't worry, the day after homecoming I'll be preparing my prom dress and it will be custom made," Sierra squeals, imagining her dream prom dress.
"Well I hope you have fun at both," Naila smiles, wiping the bread crumbs from her mouth.
"We will have fun at both because we're both going to homecoming and prom." Sierra enunciates, earning a swift head shake from Naila. "Yes, girl you are going. If you don't go then I'm not going."
"I guess you won't be going then," Naila shrugs, standing firm with her choice. "Honestly, I don't see a point in going anyways."
"The point in going is for us to create memories before you go off to Howard and me to whatever school offers me the big bucks. Plus, it is the last year of high school."
There was only one thing in Naila's way that was stopping her from going to these miraculous events. One thing: blindness.
That is what stopped her from all of her fun and all of the events held throughout high school. She's insecure about something beyond her control, so she's letting it take control over her life.
"Si, I won't be able to see anything. How am I going to enjoy myself and us making memories if I can't see?"
Sierra sighs, taking Naila's hand in hers. "Nai when I met you, you were in this condition and we've done nothing but make great memories together. You and I both know this very well. Don't let you being blind stop you from the great things life has to offer or experiences that can be tackled."
"I hate when you get all preachy on me," Naila groans, trying her best to hold in her smile.
"And I love when you know I'm right. Now, I'm going to the vending machine to get a soda. Want anything?" She asks Naila, quickly standing up from her seat.
"No." Naila smirks knowing by Sierra's voice she was up to something. "I'm going to the restroom though and while you're over there tell Kofi I said hello."
Sierra gasps, wide-eyed at her friend. "How did you—"
"Trust me, I know you," Naila says, quickly cutting her off. "Besides it was all in your voice. Now go talk to him before he leaves."
"I won't be long. I'll meet you by the restroom so we can go to our next class."
Sierra quickly got up and dashed over to the vending machine, leaving Naila to the restroom alone. The last time Naila went to the restroom alone bad things happened.
"It's okay Nai," she whispers to herself, taking in a deep breath to calm her nerves. "You can do this."
As she was approaching the restroom someone stopped her in her tracks.
"That's the men's restroom."
She knew that voice all too well. The boy she swore she'd never speak to again as long as the earth kept spinning. How could he come at a time like this? When she was alone.
"You didn't give me a chance to touch the Braille," she smartly remarks, shifting all of her weight onto one side.
"You're right, I just—"
Naila holds her hand up stopping him from proceeding. "Michael is there anything you need?"
Michael looks her up and down taking in her appearance. She was absolutely beautiful, not that she wasn't to him before, but he never really looked at her outside. With her he was always and only focused on her inside. That's what made her different from the other girls.
"Hello? Are you still there? I do indeed have to go to the restroom."
He flinches out of his trance and clears his throat. "I- I wanted to tell you congratulations on getting into Harvard. You're going to make a great student."
She scoffs, "You could've just written it in the many letters you wrote me."
"So you read my letters?" He bounces, his voice dripping with enthusiasm.
"No, I'm blind remember? Actually, I know you remember," she fake chuckles, "because I should be the last person talking about anyone being blinded by anything."
Michael winces holding his chest like someone had just stabbed him right in the heart. Hearing what he said come right out of Naila's mouth hurt like hell. He knew she wouldn't forget and it wouldn't be easy to gain her forgiveness but he had to keep trying.
"Naila I deeply apologize for what I said to you. At that time I thought you were trying to come in between Brittany and I," he sighs knowing she's actually listening to him. "Little did I know, Brittany was trying to come in between the friendship we had. She was jealous of our bond and knew I couldn't have such a bond with her."
Let that wall down you have up for him and let him back in. You know you miss your friend Naila, you guys used to be inseparable. No matter how much Naila tried, she couldn't get that voice out of her head. Her conscience was telling her to do the right thing, but the people around just wouldn't let her.
"Naila? Were you listening to me?" Michael asks, hopefully.
"Yes Michael," she sighs, slightly smiling. "and I—"
"Baby! I was looking all over for you, but I see you're a little busy," Amelia, Michael's new fling fake pouts. She then turns to Naila and says, "Oh hey, it's Naila isn't it?"
"Yes. It's nice to meet you Amelia." Naila says, holding her hand out. "Michael talks a lot about you."
Amelia shakes Naila's hand smiling wide, "it's nice to meet you as well."
Michael, confused, just looks at Amelia and through clinched teeth says, "Amelia, I said I'd meet you by class."
"But you promised me a little something before class," she tries whispering but fails terribly.
Naila frowns, but quickly turns it into a genuine smile. "I think this is my cue. Michael, Amelia... you two have a great day." Then, she quickly turns to the ladies restroom and goes inside. She stands with her back against the door and a heavy heart.
Just as the wall was being broken down, it was quickly built back up. Thanks to Amelia.
