Namjoon guided you into his living room. You sat down on his couch, wiping your tears. Namjoon got you a glass of water and some tissues before sitting down across from you. "Did Jin ever tell you how he became blind?" he asked. You shook your head.
"When he was a kid, he had retinoblastoma, a type of eye cancer that affects children. With frequent treatments they managed to get it under control, but Jin slowly lost his sight until he could only see fuzzy blurs. Everyone thought the cancer had gone away—the doctors, his parents, even Jin himself. Until several months ago, when he felt that he wasn't painting the same way as before."
"When I thought that his painting was abstract art," you murmured.
"Yeah. That confirmed to Jin his eyesight was worsening again. He tried to ignore it, hoping it would go away, but it just got worse and worse." Namjoon paused, looking down. "He didn't want to face it, but he had to know for sure. Not wanting to alarm you, he begged me to take him to the doctor's on the pretense of hanging out. When it was confirmed that he had intraocular melanoma, Jin nearly collapsed on the spot. It was malignant, which meant that the cancer spreads. It spread so quickly and it was already Stage III when Jin got it checked out."
"Jin...oh, poor Jin..." you were close to tears again. Namjoon seemed really sad as well.
"That day when you walked in on us arguing, Jin had called me about what he decided to do and I was trying to persuade him otherwise." Namjoon continued. "He went back to the doctor's the day before, and the situation was not optimistic. He told me he was going to move out and just disappear from your life. It was like ripping off a band-aid, he reasoned. Do it in one swift motion and the pain will be over in an instant."
"That's not true. I would be even sadder if Jin just disappeared without a word," you protested. Namjoon nodded.
"Exactly. That's what I told him. I also told him that you had a right to know about his cancer, because you two were dating, whether you wanted to admit it or not. Living together for three years? Come on, that's dating. As his girlfriend, you had a right to know. Jin should have your support throughout this, especially since it's such a difficult time for him. But he wouldn't listen. He wanted to spare you the trouble, spare you the grief, and he refused adamantly to tell you. I tried everything, (Y/N). Threats, pleading, logic, everything. Jin just wouldn't listen. He was so stubborn."
Namjoon said everything slowly, pronouncing each word clearly so you could read his lips easily and keep up. Your heart ached more by the second.
"I understand why he did it, but it doesn't mean he should've done so. Jin should have told me; I would have supported him unconditionally." You said, taking a sip of water. "So where's Jin now?"
"He—" Namjoon's answer was cut off by the angry buzzing of his phone. He took the call, and his face paled.
"What?! Oh my goodness. Okay, okay, you stay there, call all the hyungs, and make sure Jin is taken care of. I'm bringing (Y/N) over right now."
"What's wrong? What happened to Jin?" You knew it had to be something terrible, because Namjoon never seemed this panicked.
Namjoon was already grabbing things and pushing you towards the door. "Get in the car. Jin's in the hospital."
"Jin's in the hospital?!" You repeated in shock, trying to process this new information. "Like, he was just sent there?"
"No. He was already there, but apparently he's in critical condition now." Namjoon slammed the door shut and stabbed the key in the ignition much harder than he needed to. You sat in the passenger seat, still in shock. It wasn't until Namjoon was speeding past a yellow light when something clicked.
