Chapter4-First Day
"Are you going to tell your mother?" Dad asked, glancing over at me.
"I kinda have to." I said, flipping my phone with my hands. It was a nervous habit I'd picked up.
"She'll be mad if you don't tell her and she finds out from Larry and I."
"She'll be mad either way, dad."
"You're right." He said, hiding a smile. He knew how mom was about these kind of issues. She'd been mad for years after he left her for Larry. I knew she was upset but she took it out the wrong way. So did I.
I stared out the window and sighed. "I was thinking of asking her to come to the house. So she could see the ultrasound picture and everything."
"Are you sure you want to do that?"
"I'd get the same lecture in person that I'd get on the phone. But at least I get it out of the way. And you and Larry are good peace keepers. So I know I'm in good hands."
He patted my leg. "I'm glad you think so."
"Mom does too."
"That's not going to last much longer. She'll blame us for all of this."
"Technically, when I moved here, I started seeing Ava and since she couldn't get me pregnant... None of this was your fault."
He smiled but tried hiding it. He liked it when I said he was right and mom was wrong. He just never wanted to admit to it.
When we pulled up to the school, a small, old looking building. I was sure there were less than 600 people total there. I'd have to ask Ava.
Someone tapped on the window and I jumped. Ava stood outside the car, her backpack on her shoulders, her hair braided into pigtails. She was laughing.
I rolled my eyes. "See you later, dad."
"Do you want me to pick you up?"
"Ava and I were going to her dad's diner later. We were going to tell him about the baby."
He nodded. "Let us know how it goes."
I laughed. "Of course." I got out of the car and stepped up to Ava on the sidewalk. "You are so going to regret that."
She kissed my cheek before taking my hand. "No fighting on school grounds. Especially on your first day."
I groaned. "Don't remind me."
"What? Are you nervous?" The look on my face must have said it all because she laughed. "They'll love you."
"Come on. No one loves the new lesbian."
"I do. And that's all that matters." She kissed my cheek once more before leading me toward the school. "Our lockers are side by side so you won't have to worry about missing me any."
I laughed. "Like I'd do that."
She punched my arm.
"Hey, no fighting on school grounds."
The day was long but I was glad it was over when it was. After getting assigned loads of homework, I met up with Ava at our lockers.
"How was your first day?" She asked, stuffing a thick book into her tiny backpack.
I groaned and leaned against my locker. "I think I'd rather give childbirth."
"You won't be saying that in six months."
I rolled my eyes. "Don't remind me."
"It's not so bad. The teachers relax after a week or two and things get easier. A lot of this stuff anyway is just stuff to see what you already know and what needs to be taught."
"Couldn't they just give us tests in class?"
"You won't learn that way."
I rolled my eyes. "I knew I always hated school."
"It's not that bad, Lydia. Besides, you have me now."
I laughed and leaned against the door of her locker. Inside, were a million pictures of us. A lot of them were ones I never knew she took. There was even one of us, me asleep in her arms. She was smart, I'd give her that.
"Someone's creepy."
She laughed. "Some of my favorite pictures are of you sleeping. You'll find that about your drawings someday."
"My favorites of you. Doesn't matter what you're doing."
"I'm assuming that'll turn into pictures of the baby once the time comes."
"Same goes for you."
She shut the door and took my hand. "Come on. The diner gets busy after school lets out."
