I thought I was just an ordinary earthbender, smashing and throwing rocks all the time. I never thought of bending any other element like fire and well… maybe air and water too soon. I am Tenchi, and I am the AVATAR. I’m 14 years old. Unlike the other avatars, they revealed my identity when I was just thirteen, but I don’t know why. They just said that the world will face a huge danger and only the avatar can face it. When I ask what kind of danger, they always say “You’ll know in the right time”.
And like what I said earlier, I will learn air and waterbending soon because I just passed my firebending training and I will leave Fire Nation today. I’m both happy and sad. Happy because I can finally train for another element but sad because I will leave Fire Nation, which means I will also need to leave all my friends and all the tasty Fire Nation foods. Fire Nation is really a beautiful and progressive place. And almost everything you’ll see here is red. They are really good on making ‘red stuff’ - from houses, furniture and even their clothes. All red.
“Tenchi!” Conleth approached.
“Before you leave, wanna have a last fire bending battle?” she asked.
Conleth is one of my friends here in the Fire Nation. She is really smart and knows what to do in almost every situation. I remember the first time I met her. It was my first day here at the Fire Nation and my first day of training. I’m not yet really good on throwing a new element back then. So while I’m training, I accidentally threw a fire ball on her. Good thing she was able to avoid it and only burned a part of her hair. I got her really mad and stroke me back with even more fire balls. And the rest is history.
“Sure” I answered.
I made a sword made of fire and used to attack her. But she’s just too fast and kept on dodging my attacks. So I changed my strategy. Instead of using the fire sword, I created a fire wall and pushed it toward her. I thought it was already finished, but I was wrong. She bended my fire wall and transformed it into a huge, powerful fire ball and threw it to me. There’s no way I can return that attack to her so I used earthbending to block it.
“No fair!” she screamed.
“You can’t use earthbending on a firebending battle!” She complained.
So what does she want? Just stare at her fire ball and watch myself burn?
“I’m the avatar” I said trying not to sound nervous on her attack.
“If you want, bend other element to make it fair!”
And telling that to her really made me feel good! When Conleth was about to tell something, Monk Mendel came riding Bubu, his sky bison. Monk Mendel is the one in charge on training me. He is a twenty-eight year old monk from the Eastern Air Temple. He’s not that old but acts like one. Maybe that’s how monks were raised.
“Tenchi, we must go now!” he commanded. “We don’t have much time”
He used airbending to drag me to the bison’s saddle, and we flew up high in the air. I didn’t even have a chance to settle my battle with Conleth. Now I don’t know what she is thinking.
“What’s with the hurry?” I asked. “You didn’t even give me a chance to say goodbye!”
“We need to hurry”
I really don’t understand what he’s talking about. I admit it, the ride was kinda exciting at first. But as the time passes, it gets boring! All you’ll see are clouds. And I don’t really feel comfortable up in the air, when I’m so far from the ground, from the earth.
Suddenly, in the middle of our ride, something surprised us. A flock of some kind of reptilian birds with sharp fangs appeared. The biggest one, which I assume their leader, is coming to our direction and the whole flock followed by it. Maybe they want our food or worse, us. I threw one of my steaks that I brought from Fire Nation. Unfortunately, the reptilian bird didn’t catch it. So if my theory is right, they really wanted to eat us.
