Jim had gotten up to go get some food for them all. Rick and Kate were left in the waiting room alone.
"So. Do you like coffee?" Rick asked. Kate looked over at him and nodded.
"Would you like some?"
"Sure."
Rick got up and walked over to the coffee pot for Rick's fourth cup of coffee but only Kate's first. "Do you want anything in it?" Rick called from across the room. Kate shook her head no. Rick poured two coffees and put one cream in his. He walked back with the two coffees, a decaf and a regular. He handed the regular to Kate.
"So you say you have a daughter?" Kate took a long pull of her coffee. "Thanks you, by the way, for the coffee."
"You're welcome." Rick smiled. "Yes, I've got a daughter, Alexis. she's in kindergarten. do you have any siblings?"
"No. I'm an only child." Kate crossed her legs.
The same nurse with the black scrubs from earlier walked out to Kate and Rick. "Johanna is awake now if you'd like to visit her." Kate got up eagerly and was ready to follow the nurse when she remembered about her father.
"Maybe I should wait till my dad gets back." Kate started to sit down again.
"No, you should go. I'll wait here for you dad and when he gets back I'll let him know." Rick encouraged Kate to go see her mother.
"Thanks." With that, Kate followed the nurse back into the hospital to find her mother. The nurse led her to a room numbered, '128.'
"She's Right in there.
Kate thanked the nurse and stepped up to the open door. She knocked lightly on the door. "Mom?" Kate walked into the room.
"Katie." Johanna set down a cup of water and invited Kate in. "where's your father?"
"He went down to the cafeteria to get food for Rick and me. Rick offered to stay in the lobby and tell dad when he got back the you're awake." Kate brushed away a tear.
"Oh baby, I'm so sorry to have scared you." Johanna stretched out her arms for Kate to come closer. Kate walked around the bed and pulled up a chair. She reached out to take Johanna's hand.
"Johanna?" Jim sighed and walked into the room followed by Rick.
"This is a family matter, I understand that." Rick started.
"No! Please stay? You literally saved my life." Johanna pleaded.
'God,' Rick thought as he looked at Johanna. Her cheeks were so pale and her eyes had dunked quite a bit. She looked three pounds lighter.
"I actually have a daughter of my own to get home to." Rick pointed to the door.
"Hope to see you again, Mr. Castle." Johanna seemed to sigh as a small cloud of sadness descended across her face.
"Please. Call me Rick." Rick smiled sadly.
