I race past where the local church used to be, my pack heavy on my shoulders. I do a roll to soften my landing as a explosion knocks me off my feet. I look over my shoulder, to my left, and snatch a glimpse of my friend Kelly. She too is running. I lift my free hand up and signal to her. She nods, and signs back. I then nod in response. Dodging a few more explosions, I roll down the steps to the subway, the only place where we are free from the explosions. I sit down against the wall, out of breath. Beside me, Kelly does the same.
"Debbie' she says, 'Do you think we're safe?"
No. We never will be. All we can do now is survive the Ending. For now, nowhere is safe. This is the safest spot that I've seen. Let's make this our base."
Kelly, being a year younger than me, was allowed to be scared. Man, she was scared of me. And in the dim light, with my serious gray eyes, dagger glinting as it caught the last few rays of light, I imagine I must look sort of scary. But she was even scarier than me sometimes. She can kill you in a matter of seconds with that bow. And it was at least three pounds heavier than she was. But in her heart and soul, she was just a young kid, who's days should be fulled with fun and hope and rainbows and unicorns. But she acts her age most of the time. Like I said, she can be just like a little kid sometimes.
But me, being like her bigger sister, couldn't look scared. If I was scared, she would be even more scared. I had to stay strong. I wanted, no, had, to be the hero that she looks at me like. I wanted to be the person who protects her from the big, bad monsters.
We spread out our supplies from our packs. We each have a sleeping bag, some food, water purifying tablets, and some other items that we split. I had a blanket, ten feet of paracord, and some spare clothes. Kelly had a clock, some paper, some writing utensils, and extra arrows and bow making supplies. She makes all of her own arrows and bows. I am also armed with my two daggers, an assortment of knives, and some ninja throwing star things.
After we split everything up, I venture out in search of food and supplies, my pack serving as a game bag. The explosions have stopped, but I still need to be careful. The explosions have wreaked havoc on the buildings, and many that survived are in danger of falling down. First, I dart into the church. The ceiling has caved in, and I know that many birds live up in the rafters. More than likely they were sleeping, and the explosions killed them. Picking my way through the debris, I search the floor. I pick up some wood for fires, but otherwise see nothing. Just as I turn away, something feathery catches my eye. Yes! Three dead birds lie on the floor, coved by a wooden beam. I gently extract them, and put all three in my bag. Grabbing more firewood, I straddle a beam and head out the door.
I walk back to the subway, where we made our base. I step over fallen debris, and duck under beams. Wooden splinters cover the ground. Collapsed houses dot this barren landscape. My stomach twists as I see body's littering the ground. Their arms are twisted around, killed when they were blasted into buildings. Some where killed in the explosions, and their body's look almost peaceful, just lying on the ground. Then I see something.
I kneel on the ground, throwing up what little food I had in me. I had looked over and seen several small lizards eating a body. I reach in my coat for the knifes strapped there, moaning as I do so. One of the lizards hear me, and they all dart away after him. Dang it. It was a perfect chance for food. Oh well. I'll remember that their here. Walking a little bit more, I reach the entrance to our temporary house.
Kelly is right where I last saw her. She has set down our sleeping bags, and make a small fire pit. The food is wrapped up is the blanket, and the rest of the supplies are in her bag. She smiles at the firewood, and grins at the birds. Yes, she likes animals. To eat. She has no problem with killing animals for food. Which is good. In the days to come, I think we will be eating animals more than I would like.
I skin the birds, and cook them over the fire. When their done, I hand one to Kelly. We each eat one, and some of our food supplies. We need to conserve what little food we have. I toss more firewood on the fire, and turn to Kelly.
"So' I say 'This has been exciting."
"Exciting is an understatement." Kelly murmurs, but I hear a hint of humour in her voice. Obviously she latched on to my sarcasm.
We chat for a while, discussing plans. We decide what to do tomorrow, and who takes watch. I take first watch, so Kelly snuggles up into the sleeping bag. I watch her auburn hair curl around, framing her face. She looks so innecent. Before I can stop myself, I begin to hum a lullaby. Eventually, I begin to add the words. And so I sit there, singing, and reflecting back on the day. And wondering what the next day holds for us. The only survivors of the Ending.
