The government had always warned us about the Ending. But when it came, everyone was caught unprepared. Except for me, and Kelly. When the explosions started, my brain, from years of secret training at night with Kelly, went into action mode. I had grabbed my bag, and ran the the store, where I met up with Kelly. Together, we had ran, dodging explosions as we ran on.

We had trained late at night, climbing dawn and meeting up under the cover of blackness. We fought, hunted, and honed our survival skills. That was what saved our lives. When everybody else panicked and ran around in circles screaming their heads off, we knew what to do. We had our bags ready to go. We had a plan. No one else did. As far as I know of, we are the only survivors.

I woke Kelly up after a little while. It was really six hours later, but with the never changing land, it seemed like a short time. She took watch, and I slept. It takes a while, but eventually I fall asleep. And I wish I hadn't.

My dreams are nightmares. I watch in slow motion as I grab my pack and run. My brother Sam trying to follow my, but getting killed by a falling brick. Seeing my whole word falling apart. Everything I had known blasted to bits. The boy I had my first crush on, the boy that I hated, even the mean, popular girls that eased me at school. All killed by explosions, the blasts, the falling items. My whole world being blasted apart.

"Debbie, wake up!" cries one of the many people fleeing the scene. "Wake up!" Then I realize that it was Kelly yelling at me. I open my eyes, and see her peering down at me, grinning as I get up. She points to some meat and crackers set out, and a jug of water.

"You should eat, and wash up. Today is a big day." And so I eat, savoring the taste of the crackers, though they were a tad dry. After I eat, I splash some water on my face, its coldness bring all my senses on edge.

I go over the plan with Kelly. She stays here. I go out, see what I can find. After an hour, head back. Then she goes out, and I keep watch. And then repeat, with breaks for lunch and dinner. And with the plan fresh in my mind, I go out. I have both packs, and my knifes. My daggers are strapped to my side, but those are for close combat.

I step over the rubble, heading for the store where we met up. After a brief hike, I make it. All the glass windows are shattered, the glass fragments everywhere. I grab a decent size one for Kelly. She needs a good weapon other than her bow. After putting that away, I step through where the door used to be. Fingering a knife, I make my way down. I first find the clothing asile. Some of the cheap garments managed to survive, and I grab a pair of pants my size, and a sweater for Kelly. It's getting to be fall, and that means that it's gonna be colder. And we need all the supplies we can get. All the food is close by, so I head there. I had to climb over a fallen counter to get there, and accidentally cut myself with a fallen bit of glass, But it's pretty smooth going.

I breath in, the scent of all the food, washing over me. I spy a fallen shopping cart, and right it. The sides are dented but otherwise it looks fine. Wheeling it around, I push it over to where some cans lie fallen. I pick them up, and check them out. They look decent, and fresh. Grinning, I put them in the cart and move along to where I know the meat aisle is. Years of being dragged here for grocery shopping have imprinted a map of the store in my brain. Falling it now, I chose a different route to get to the meat. The route I was going to take is blocked by two fallen counters.

Since I go around by the medicine aisle, I stop there and pick up some containers that aren't broken. Setting them in the cart, I realize that most of the meat won't last long. I can only take what we can eat. So, when I get there, I grab what looks like it will last the longest. Most it it needs to be kept cool, so i would prefer hunting and getting fresh meat. But now, you get what you get and you don't get upset.

I check the clock after a bit more scavenging. I managed to grab some more clothes, and five jugs of water. Yikes! Almost an hour has pasted. Getting to the exit, I spot one of those damned lizards. I finger a knife, bringing it's hilt up, up, and, perfect! Bringing my hand forwards in a neat, sweeping motion, I release it. The lizard looks, up, and gets hit by my knife. The force with which I hit it brings it reeling backwards, and the knife, which is stuck in it's neck, sticks to a wooden beam. Carefully, I walk over, and extract the knife. The lizard is dead, and gushes blood. Carefully, I wrap it up in a bag, and place it in my pack. I transfer all the item in the cart into the two packs also. I run out of room, so I use some bags.

Now laden down with bags, I trudge out of the store. I get halfway back, when I trip. Everything goes flying. Including me.

"Kelly!" I scream. "Help!" I had managed to crawl most of the way back, but my right ankle hurts like hell. I take another step, and white hot pain shots through my leg. "AHHH!" I scream out in pain, collapsing on the ground, as Kelly runs over.

"Oh god oh god oh god. What do I do?" She yells, as she races over. I lie down in pain, thinking.

"Get the food. I can get there myself, if I don't carry anything."

She nods. So, I inch forward, ignoring the blinding pain that threatens to overcome me. It's almost dark when I get there. Kelly rushes out to help me make to trip down the stairs. She guides me over to my bed, and has me lie down. I watch as she takes out a sick, some medicine, and long pieces of cloth. She gives me the medicine, and gets to work making a splint for my leg. It isn't perfect, but it works for now.

We pop open two cans of a ravioli thing for dinner, and cook the lizard. The meat is kind of hard, but it tastes good. We sort out our living space, and settle down to sleep, with Kelly taking first watch. And as sleep claims me, I wonder, just wonder, if anyone else is alive here. Anyone.
