The weather was cold and windy. I shivered as cars flew by, but I remained in my spot. It was exactly twelve I showed up a few minutes early. Deep down I was afraid that the one minute difference would affect everything. After a wait that seemed to drag on for ages, a different man appeared. I knew they were connected though, I just wasn't sure why.
"Do you want him?" He asked me.
I nodded, most definitely more than anything in the world. I wanted to hold him tightly, I was tired of being taunted by him everyday. I knew it wasn't really him. My conscious always hated me, he never treated me that way. But I deserved it for letting him and his family down.
"You task is on this sheet paper, burn it after you read it, read it over as much as you'd like. Don't inform anyone or your lover will die."
I nodded and a pang of fear ran through my body. I felt like the sky was crushing me. I couldn't breathe as I read the first words.
Order of the Assassination of Lee Shin - Aye
.
I informed the police, if anything went wrong I needed someone to know the truth. I could never murder a man anyway. I couldn't imagine taking someone's life purposely. It could never be by my hands. Right? I sighed as I headed to the new meeting place. It was grim, almost like a slaughterhouse of sorts. I couldn't imagine Hui coming here everyday. How had he gotten mixed into these people? Dealing drugs, working with assassin's? There was so much I didn't know. I had only seen one side of him, how had I fallen in love with an image? Was any of it real, I couldn't comprehend. There were two men who led me down the hall. I knew I was meeting the leader. I was angry, this man just gets away with letting Hui disappear. I had been too caught up with my emotions. I could've searched, and I would not be here getting help from someone who sees death everyday.
I was finally led to a door, it opened and I saw a large room. There were women at desks packaging and measuring substances. I assumed that it was hard drugs, the room smelled of melted plastic and tar. I suppressed my coughs and continued behind the two men. There was a door off to the side, when we entered the room it was cramped. The two men had barely enough room to stand apart from me.
A tired, dark haired man sat at the desk adjacent of me. He had a set face, angry and firm. He was on a black phone, he spoke quickly. I wasn't really sure what he was saying, most of it in code. At last he hung up, unfortunately he looked directly into my eyes.
.
"You are here for Lee Hoe Taek?" I nodded and he looked me over.
"You understand the job, details are on the page."
"I have a request?" He scoffed.
"A request?"
"Yes, I would like to see that Hui is alive before I engage in all of this."
"Very well then." He pointed to a guy off to the side holding a gun. He pulled out his phone and handed it to me.
There were at least a dozen images of Hui. Tied up, he laid on the floor covered in bruises. I felt sorry for him, and angry at the man ahead of me.
"Let me see him alive." I snarled.
"After the transaction."
I wanted to see that he was okay. I didn't care what they could do to me. I needed him honestly. I needed help.
