"(y/n), let's go!"
"Coming!" I yelled as I glanced at myself one last time in the mirror. I ran to the door gathering my purse and keys on the way to the door. Tonight was going to be so fun!
"Do I look alright?" I asked my friend as all four of us shuffled into the car.
"Yeah, girl! You look great." She reassured me.
"We all look great!" My other friend exclaimed energetically. I laughed at their silliness and my other friends joined in. Car rides with my friends were never quiet, laughter and conversations always kept things interesting. Ignoring my friends and the streetlamps that zoomed past my window, I took out my phone to complete my DuoLingo lesson before I forgot.
"Hey, can't you take a break from that app? You're on it way too much." My friend pointedly asked with a chuckle.
"Well, I-" I started to speak but my other friend beat me to it.
"Come on, this was supposed to our night! Just this once, put down the phone?"
"Oh, alright." I reluctantly agreed. The whole car cheered and I scowled playfully at my friends.
The whole night was spent dancing, eating, and a little bit of drinking until the time was well past midnight. One of my friends generously offered to stay off of alcohol and drove us all home. As I sank into my sheets and blankets, all I could think of was how much I loved my friends and how much I regretted eating that 3 bean burrito.
The morning light seeped through my curtains and onto my face as I slowly woke up. My headache thumped irritatingly in the back of my head and I groaned as I stretched my sore muscles. I never really held my alcohol well. I yawned and was planning to have a nice warm plate of waffles when my phone buzzed with a notification. I glanced down at the screen to notice the DuoLingo app reminding me to do my lessons. I grumbled irritably and threw my phone down on the bed.
"I'll just do it later." I mumbled to myself. Except, I never got around to doing another lesson. I would just make up excuses.
"I'm too tired."
"I can do it later."
"It's not that important right now."
Soon enough I stopped getting emails. Stopped getting notifications. Started forgetting my lessons. I'd be lying if I said I missed it. It actually felt kinda nice not having another responsibility on my shoulders. But then the messages came.
You forgot to do your lessons!
Did you forget?
When are you going to do your lessons again?
They showed up as blank notifications. Giving no indication of where they came from or who was sending them.
I stared down at my phone in confusion. What were they talking about? The messages would appear on my screen once a week. Always speaking of missing lessons. I was a bit freaked out. Why were they texting me? Who are they? The creepiest thing though, was the fact that they would always text me right when I woke up, no matter what time. It increased from once a week to every day. And the messages got more personal.
You really thought you could leave me?
Did you think you could ignore me?
I believed in you.
Then one day I woke up to the scariest text yet.
You can't ignore me forever... (Y/n).
My eyes widened in shock. They knew my name! Panic started to well up inside my chest. It was terrifying enough when they had my number and my sleeping schedule but now they know my name! My breathing started to quicken. I threw my phone underneath the covers of my bed and tried to focus on slowing my breath but all I could think was: they know who I am. I was getting lightheaded. My chest refused to stop heaving copious amounts of air into my lungs. My eyes fluttered as black spots filled my vision and then everything went dark.
