Shrek groaned in frustration as his stubby green fingers worked on tying the bow tie but to no avail. The piece of the garment just wouldn't look right.
He took another glance at himself in the mirror and sighed in defeat.
His big day has finally arrived but he just wasn't looking forward to it.
Deep inside his heart, he knew Fiona wasn't the one he truly wanted to be with but it was way too late to say anything now.He would be a married ogre in no less than 30 minutes.
Suddenly, a knock on the door snapped him out of his thoughts.
Who could it be? Weren't the guests supposed to wait inside the chapel?Carefully prying the door open, he peeked through the opening;
"Knock knock! Can I come in?"
He was greeted by a cheerful-looking boy with a mop of purple hair sitting on top of his head.
Without questioning, Shrek opened the door fully, which gave the boy the opportunity to practically waltz inside the room."You shouldn't be here, " Shrek said sternly, crossing his arms.
"Relaax~ I'm just visiting an old friend before he ties the knot. Is that so wrong (uwu)?"
Friend.
A word that struck the ogre deep into his heart.
Knowing they could never again be something more...
He felt Kokichi's small hands working on the bow tie, making it look just like it was supposed to.
Perfect.
"You shouldn't be here," Shrek snarled as he tore Kokichi's hands off of himself, "I didn't invite you for a reason, you know?! They would never unders-"
"Why do you care so much what other people think?!"
"I- Huh?" Shrek was flabbergasted. He had never heard Kokichi yell at him before. It was kind of new...And arousing.
"You always let other people's opinions of you control you! Like you said, what we had is over and I don't feel the way I used to about you but please, do me a favor."
"Hmph!" Shrek turned his back against Kokichi, facing the window, "And what would that be?"
"For once in your life; listen to your heart." Shrek's eyes widened in surprise as he was not expecting such an answer.
The longer he stared into Kokichi's bright, purple eyes the more memories came flooding back into his mind.
Without even thinking about it, Shrek crouched down and leaned in for a kiss.It was like a gravitational pull beyond their control. But just as their lips were about to touch, Shrek broke away from the tempting trance.
"No!" He yelled as he abruptly pulled away from the almost kiss, roughly gripping Kokichi's shoulders.
"I don't want this! Jus- Just stay away from me!" Shoving him aside, Shrek ran out of his house as fast as his heavy feet could carry him, while also trying to avoid the mud getting onto his tuxedo.
Kokichi bitterly watched his retreating figure as a single tear rolled down his kokicheek.
"I lied...I still love you." He whispered to no one in particular, the only listener being the soft summer breeze.
---------------------------------------------------------"Do you, Princess Fiona, take this ogre as your lawfully wedded husband? Do you promise to love and cherish him, in health or sickness and in wealth or poverty, and stay with him 'till death do you part?" The priest's nasal voice rang through the chapel, like nails on the chalkboard.
"I do." She smiled at him. He tried to give a smile back, but it came out more like the look of constipation.
"And do you, Mr. Shrek..."
He didn't bother listening to the priest's yammering. He was more focused on reliving his happy memories with Kokichi while sad Taylor Swift music played quietly in the background in his mind.
In the sea of guests, he spotted the face he wanted to see the ̶m̶o̶s̶t̶ least.
Kokichi Ouma.
Kokichi gave him a big smile and a thumbs-up, yet the pain in his eyes was clearly evident.
The ogre wanted nothing more than to run over to the small man and hold him in his arms while his plump green lips kissed all over Kokichi's face. But it was too late for that.
He was about to get married for Lord's sake. To the love of his life!
...Right?
But deep inside his heart, he knew he was making a mistake.
Kokichi's wise words rang in his mind like some bell on a new bike that's being tested out by some annoying kid.'Listen to your heart, listen to your heart, listen to y--'
"M r. S h r e k, do you or do you not take her as your wife?!" The priest roared, clearly impatient.
Shrek's eyes were glued to Kokichi who was about to leave the chapel, crying. No, not crying, full-on sobbing! With snot running down his nose and everything.
"I-uh...I...Well, uh...I do...NOT!"
Everyone in the room gasped in shock as they were not expecting this. Kokichi turned towards the altar, clearly interested in what was going to happen next.
"Uh, Fiona," He stammered, "I love you but I cannot marry you. The truth is, I am in love with another and his name is Kokichi Ouma!"
Kokichi gasped in surprise as Shrek let go of Fiona's hand and ran towards him, lifting him up and spinning him in a circle.
The room went silent. Everyone stared at the two of them In shock.
"I love this man and if you don't approve...I don't give a rat's ass!" Shrek announced loudly.
The silence was broken by a loud wail, as Fiona ran past the two of them with tears streaming down her face.
"Boo!"
People were outraged. They started throwing flower bouquets, rice and basically anything the could find lying around at the duo. Kokichi barely dodged a floral vase that was aimed at his head.
"What do we do now?" Shrek asked in between panting, clearly exhausted from running.
"Bail!" Kokichi took his boyfriend's large hand and led him towards a carriage that was parked just outside the chapel.
He took the horses by the reins and got the carriage moving. They were going somewhere far away from here. Far from Far Far Away. Far from the people who couldn't accept them.
They were going to make brand new memories together.
All they needed was each other.
Nothing could stop them. Not DreamWorks™, Not Spike Chunsoft™, Not even Lord himself.
They were on their way to live Happily Ever After.
