When Valentino calls again, that night, it wakes me from a peaceful somber.
"Valentino?" I pull myself up into a sitting position on the couch where I was sleeping. Kiara took my bed.
"Ana. You've been ignoring my calls" he notes in a bitter tone.
"I know. I just needed time to think, to... process." I lie. I've been stalling, trying to decide how best to confront him regarding my best friends' murder. Would he lie? Would he feel betrayed by the ridiculous accusation? Would he admit it?
"I understand, but... when you are ready, come see me." He buys my lie because he is admand on believing I am the same fragile girl he rescued on the beach. The reality is that he can't control me, and he wants to.
"I will." I answer. I touch the key dangling from my neck, between my breasts. "I promise."
I go back to sleep, but I don't dream. No nightmare could compare to the monsters that walk the earth by day.
