My heart's beating too fast. I can't think. There are voices all around me, but they all seem so distant. Except for one.
"Prim!"
I can hear my sister in the distance. She's looking for me. I try to turn around, but the crowd is moving too fast.
"Katniss!"
I scream her name as loud as I can. My legs are shaking. Why me? Why today? Why does this have to happen?
"Just stay calm, Prim. Everything will be fine!"
I know it won't, but I take her word for it. I trust Katniss with my life. I love her more than anyone in the world, except for dad, but he's....
Before I have time to finish gathering my thoughts, the crowd approaches a roped area of ground. They hurry us all inside. I try to push my way through the crowd, towards Katniss, but there are too many people. Some towering above me, others look about my age.
Suddenly, everything goes quiet. I turn around to see what's happening, but my view is blocked by an older boy. I don't need to see what's happening to know that I can't be good. They're going to call the names. This is it. This is the moment I've been dreading for weeks. I can hear my sister's kind words racing around in my mind, but I'm too nervous to pay any attention to them. Then, somewhere in the distance, I hear them calling.
"Primrose Everdeen."
My heart stops. I can feel the colour draining from my face. All of the other children turn around to look at me. My legs threaten to give way, and I feel like I'm about to fall. Suddenly, something hits me from behind. The crowd parts as I go flying out of the roped enclosure, and come crashing to the ground. They're all staring at me. I can feel their eyes drilling right through me, as if they're staring into my soul. I can feel a sharp stinging in my right leg. I look down. My knee is grazed, and bleeding from the fall. I can feel tears welling up in my eyes. I try my best to stand up.
Out of nowhere, people begin grabbing my arms and pulling me to my feet. I try to struggle away from them, but their grip is too strong. With every ounce of breath left in me, I scream at the top of my voice. One word.
"KATNISS!"
***********
I woke up in my bed. Sweat dripping down from my face, my heart pounding. It was a dream. It was just a dream. Just as the relief of my discovery hit me, so did the cold, dark emptiness of my room. I screamed at the top of my voice for my sister, the fear rising up inside me. Just as it became almost unbearable, Katniss came running into my room. She hurried straight to my bed, hugging me so tight, it felt almost uncomfortable, but I didn't care. Katniss was here; I knew that everything would be fine.
"Shh! Prim, it's ok! It's ok. Everything's fine!"
Her words felt like velvet on my cheek. Everything seemed better now.
"They picked me." I murmured, still shaking from the nightmare I had just experienced. Katniss looked at me and smiled.
"It's ok Prim. That's not going to happen. Your name's only in once, remember."
"I know." I stammered, my voice wavering slightly.
Katniss continued gently shushing me, waiting until I was calm.
"Listen, I've got to go now, ok?" Her warm smile practically glowed with kindness. I didn't want her to leave. I wanted her to stay with me forever.
"Can't you stay?" I asked, staring deep into her eyes. Despite their cold, grey colour, they still seemed as warm and bright as the rest of her. I loved her so much. So much, that whenever she left, I felt more alone than I ever did anywhere else.
"No, Prim. You know I can't. I have to get food for you and mom." She sighed at me, as if I was being a burden.
"But what about the-"
"I know. It's the reaping today. Listen, go to sleep, and I'll be back before you know it. Ok?"
Despite my fear, I nodded. I knew that without Katniss going to hunt for food, me and mom would surely starve. Maybe if mom had done something more to help us, Katniss wouldn't have needed to hunt for us. Katniss smiled at me, and began to sing. I recognized the song instantly. My father always used to sing it to me, before he died. Katniss saw my smile, and gently kissed my forehead.
"You finish the rest in your head, ok."
I nodded again. Katniss smiled one last time, and left.
I looked around the room. It seemed a lot less dark and frightening, but it was still so lonely without Katniss. Still shaking slightly, I climbed back into bed, tucking the sheets as high as I could over my face, and drifted off into a deep sleep.
