The World Changed

My name is Alani. Through my life, I thought I was color blind. I could only ever see black and white, none of the other colors that people called "blue" or "yellow" or "pink". My parents told me that when I meet the one I'd have color. Course me being like 15, I never believed that. I just thought that magically color would appear. Flash forward and I'm 17 with two months until I'm an adult. But guess who still doesn't have color. That's right! Me. At this point, I was positive I wouldn't ever see color. But that all changed. This is my story.

Tuesday-

I just got off work and I was walking home when I decided to stop for coffee in our town's small little cafe. Nice quaint place with a homely feel and our towns best artwork scrawled across the walls. I often visited to have a quiet place to study my work. I walked in to find my best friend standing at the register.

"Your regular Alani?" he tilted his head.

"Yes please Leo," I replied with a smile and gave my cash. I started over towards the waiting area when I feel a tray shoved into my side.

"Sorry!" a guy roughly my age exclaimed.

"It's okay. Really it's no big deal," I said with a small smile. He smiled back and continued his work. I looked over to Leo and he raised an eyebrow. I gave him a look and he just shook his head with a frown. Okay... I thought to myself. I watched him finish making my coffee and then walked over to accept it.

"Thanks, Leo. Can I ask you a question?" I asked.

"Yeah, sure. What's up?" he replied.

"Have you ever seen colors? Like the colors, older people talk about?" I say back.

"Can't say that I have Alani. Here's your coffee though." He says as he reaches to hand me the cup. I graciously accept the cup, brushing over his fingers. Suddenly he gasps.

"What is it, Leo?" I ask curiously.

"Do you see it?" He asks in awe.

"Do I see what?" I say confused.

"You don't see them? The colors...?" He trails off and starts to back up.

"No, but that must mean your soulmate is here somewhere!" I say excitedly. At least someone was going to find their love today.

"Alani," he starts slowly, "You realize that you'll only start to see colors when you touch your soulmate," he ends quietly. It takes me a minute to realize what he means.

"You mean, you saw colors after you touched... me?" I ask slow. He just nods his head. Why don't I see them then? I start to panic seeing him back up more. "Wait. Stop Moving," I say abruptly. He gives me a look as I motion for him to come around to the front of the counter.

"What is it Alani?" he asks in a sad tone. All I do in return is lift myself up and kiss him softly with my eyes closed. His lips are soft and smooth against mine while the kiss lasts. I slowly pull away before opening my eyes. I stare at him with wide eyes. "Do you see them now?" he asks cautiously. I nod to him smiling and pull him in for another kiss.

"You're mine. You're my other half," I whisper quietly. We stand there hugging for a few minutes and then I have to go.

"Call me tonight Alani." he kisses me goodbye and I start to head home.

That's it. That's my story. All the myths about true love and fairy tale soul mates, they finally came true for me. I finally have colors. I hope whoever's reading this finds their colors too.
