We lived with Amma for about 4 years. Me and my sister, we used to go to school. I must say, we were so much more fortunate than other slum children. When they used to work, we used to go to school and study. Amma never made us work for her or anything. She did all the hard work and we only ate the sweet fruits.
I watched other children of the slum and pitied their condition. They used to work all day with their parents. None of them went to school. We were the odd ones out. But I didn't resent it. And I know she didn't either.
We often asked Amma why she didn't send us to school. She always used to say "because it is your age to learn. Your whole life is there for working." I understood I much later. And I realized what a good mother she was.
Things were pretty good for us after she discovered us. Or rather. I flung myself at her door. But you see, there is a reason I always say.... Whenever you are too happy and peaceful, just be prepared for the storm coming ahead.
And the storm came indeed.
