"KIDS, GET OUT HERE"

I swear Atlantis could hear my mother scream. I pushed the thought away, though, because I was in a hurry to leave too. I was excited, because today was my first day in high school. I tied my white high top converse and stretched my stripped white and maroon dress down. No matter how many times my mother said it looked cute, I just couldnt bring myself to believe her.

After throwing my denim jacket on, I ran outside. My siblings, who I had helped get ready earlier on, followed me out.

"OK STOP." We all froze and looked towards my mom. She held her phone in her hands, ready to take the million pictures that would soon be on facebook.

"Ama! Ya vamos tarde(We're already late)!" My little sister, who was barely starting 7th grade said. We all groaned at her irritating whines. We weren't even late, seeing that we still had about 30 min until I had to be at school and I got in the earliest.

"Ssshhhh, stand there and smile, enfadosa (annoying)!" We all wore our best fake smiles before we heard the phone click. Once she took the one picture, we all piled into the white Chevrolet. "Una mas (One more)!"

"No!"

"Aye que malos!" My mom got into the driver's seat next to me, my three sisters sitting behind us and my baby brother in his car seat. On our way to school, I texted my best friend Laura.

Me: Almost there. How bout u?

From Laura: I'm here. Waiting 4 u in the front.

Me: okokokok :)))))

"We're here, my little freshy."

"Mami, please don't call me that." She gave me playful tug on my ear before unlocking the doors to let me out.

"Bye, love you! Love you kids!" An echo of I love yous poured out of the car before I slammed it shut and ran to my friend. That day rain poured over all of us, leaving the 2016 freshman's soaked and running to the auditorium.

I had lost track of my friends and sat next to a childhood friend, Kathrynn and her friend group. The student council told us what to wear and what not to wear, using different senior volunteers as examples. Then they went through school rules. You know, the whole "Dont use your phones" and "Dont make out because you will get pregnant" talk. Then we got kicked out of the auditorium and had to leave earlier than scheduled because of the heavy rain, that they made us wait in.

I found Laura again later. We played around in the mud and rain until my mother picked us up. At one point in time, I went behind and jumped, but she moved out of the way, letting me fall face flat on the coarse road. I didnt feel any pain until I got home and noticed the dirty cuts with dried blood.

It rained that whole first week, dirtying all our new shoes and clothing. Our backpacks and homework were soaked by the time we had to turn them in. And I tripped so many times, a friend would escort me down any slippery slopes. It was awesome.
