Ryan Baxter loved his job. What was his job exactly? Well, to put it bluntly, he was a historian. By definition, a historian is a person who studies History extensively, and is considered an expert on all things involving past events. He was 44, he'd been doing what he loved doing ever since he picked up his first History book in 5th grade. The number one thing Ryan loved about History was that you could basically learn the chronological happenings of the world and come to realize how flawed humankind really was. yet despite that, you could use knowledge on humanity's past mistakes in order for them not to be repeated again, and to change the world for the better.
Ryan was a bearded, heavyset man who always wore the same type of clothes everyday, scratch that, he had always been wearing the same style of clothing since he started his job as a historian. That style was an orange collared shirt and blue jeans. Sometimes he wore a black collared shirt, sometimes blue, sometimes green. He almost always had his spectacles on, though he opted not to wear them too often since they made him look 'old'.
'Doesn't seem like it's happening anytime soon, though.' muttered Ryan to himself, as he sat on his desk in hs office at Cambridge University.
There was still war, there was still famine, humans still continued to kill each other, despite it being the year 2014. He wondered if human beings could ever even stop fighting and killing each other.
'It's in our human nature, I suppose.'
Speaking of human nature, he was reviewing some information online about a famous, or, infamous man in history, specifically in Romanian history. Ryan enjoyed reading about this man, despite how sickening it was to read about his many atrocities. This man existed during the mid-1400s, was a great figure in Romanian history, and was known for a certain practice he did to his enemies.
Impalement.
To the Romanians, his people, he was a hero. A great man who did all he could to stave off the Turks and prevent them from taking over Romania. To everyone else in Europe, he was a monster, a truly vile and evil man, who utilized psychological warfare and committed thousands of war crimes, and was truly worthy of his name: 'Son of the Devil'.
His name was Vladislav "The Impaler" Dracula.
"Hm, born in 1431, Vlad Dracula III was born to Vlad Dracul II of Wallachia, a member of the Order of the Dragon, a secret society dedicated to protecting Christianity in Eastern Europe. At age 13, he and his brother Radu the Handsome were sent as political hostages as a form of Tribute to the Sultan. Under the Sultan, he and his brother were raised as soldiers and as scholars, growing in both body and mind. By the time they reached 15, he and his brother were both highly trained killers. He was sent to fight for the Turkish Army, and was known for impaling his opponents' dead bodies on stakes and letting them be displayed, in order to ward off enemies." read Ryan, his brow furrowing as he imagined sending his own son, Arnold, a 13 year old boy, to the army to be trained as a cold-blooded killer.
'Vlad and his brother definitely did not have the best dad."
"You're right about that, good sir."
Ryan jumped and swivelled his chair. He had not heard anyone come in, though he should have; his office's door had a bell on it that was set to ring if anyone was coming in. Even more peculiar, it was 11:35pm, the university should have been closed and all students should have been in their dorms.
