The day was hot, hotter than it had ever been in Zachary's short memory. He picked up a balloon from the dwindling pile and looked across the field, homing in on his target, but before he could throw, Ethan hit him in the face.
"Hey, no fair!" He yelled, and shrieking, hurled the plump water balloon at his best friend.
It was just the right weather for this game. Zach was glad Ethan had suggested it. Whoever ran out of water balloons first was the loser, and you got a point if you hit the other guy. He missed, and Ethan laughed at him.
"Oh, it's on!" Zach shouted, and picked up another balloon. He tossed it at the other boy with full force and hit him on the stomach.
"Shoot, you got me!" Ethan called, but was up in a flash, holding his own balloon. "I'm still winning though!"
"Not for long!" And with a joyous shout, he lobbed another balloon. Soon the boys were both wet to the skin.
