The city of angels was on fire. A inferno that had engulfed the city from the west and spread all the way to the east end, the cries of the few escaped victims wailing through the air. I pulled my scarf tighter around my mouth as to not allow the smoke and ash from filling my lungs even though i knew i would smell like my own inferno when i returned. The rest of my party had departed knowing the few remaining souls would spread the news if they made it to the nearest city of "insert name here". Typically i would be with them, i would go home with my fellow people to eat and drink and celebrate the monsters we had destroyed today. But as the nightfall gathered and the orange firelight illuminated the sky above, i couldn't help but stay and appreciate the beauty.
From the crumbling building i crouched on, no one could see me. If anyone dared to adventure up here i would simply look like an assasin of some sort in my leather battle attire with my face covered and hood up. my cloak covered my figure so anyone who looked at me would think of a gangly man or boy. The rocks under my boots scraped as i stood up, taking in the surrounding landscape covered in night. Any place within several miles would see the smoke, the desolate land was covered in an orange tinge and smoke as far as i could see. The sky above seemed to weep with stars as the smoke rose higher and higher. It was only as if these monsters creator wept for their deaths.
"What are you doing up here?"
My laugh caught in my throat as i turned and caught sight of my watcher. He stood opposite of me, standing on the other side of the ledge. His boots scraped on the rubble as he lept with ease from his spot on the ledge and strode towards me. I met him halfway in the middle and took in his slightly charred and ashy battle cloak that hid his rippling muscles beneath. The dust seemed to swirl around him, or was it the darkness that poured from his presence?
"Why did you stay?" He questioned.
Violet eyes met my emerald stare as he gently pulled my scarf down to reveal the cut that split my bottom lip. Fingers brushed against it briefly before strong fingers gripped my chin so my face was lit by the fire that steadily burned beside us. Some sort of a rumble echoed through him as he surveyed the few bruises that had begun forming on my face.
"Thayer." The name was thick on my tongue that peaked out to lick my now dry lips. "You're suppose to be with the party. What will everyone say if their king isn't there to lift a toast with them?"
My smirk slowly faded as he leaned down to kiss me, his raven black hair tickling the top of my eyebrows. I had told him so many times he needed to trim his hair but he refused every time. To his grumble of a protest i pulled back and put my scarf back into place, partially to hide the blush that blossomed on my cheeks.
"I just wanted some alone time. Besides, the fire made the sky look beautiful. We always rush back to the palace so fast we never get to enjoy what we did."
His laughter echoed across the empty ruins as he extended his arm to me. "You know, for someone who's going to be my Queen in a few weeks, you sure do like to be alone quite a bit. Should i take offense?" The elbow he received to his ribs was enough to ensite almost chaotic laughter in him. He hadn't been this happy in quite awhile which was the real reason i had stayed behind, in hopes we would get a few minutes alone. Truly alone, no guards or prying eyes, no one looking for gossip on the soon to be Queen. Just pure happiness where we could act like the kids we use to be.
"Let's go home my dear."
