*Scott's POV*
It was around lunchtime when the rumor of a new kid finally reached me. It's a big deal, since Beacon Hills is such a small town.
I had decided to let Derek know, in case the kid was with hunters. It was common knowledge that Beacon Hills has an alpha watching over it.
Me: Derek
Derek: What, Scott?
Me: There's a new kid
Derek: Human?
Me: Haven't met him yet. All I know is his name
Derek: Which is?
Me: Stiles Stilinski
Derek: Get on his good side. His dad is the sheriff
Me: What happened to the old one??
Derek: Transferred, probably. Just make sure he's human, and stay on his good side
Suddenly, I crash into someone. My heightened senses apparently don't help when I'm not paying attention. However, it helps me upright myself and hold onto the person who I hit.
"Sorry!" I apologize, pulling away.
I look at the unfamiliar student and sniff the air. A new scent: his scent. Of course, it's a bit unrecognizable since the halls are crowded. But I know this is the new kid.
"I-It's okay," he stutters, looking to the ground.
Hesitantly, I put my hand on his right shoulder. "Are you okay?" I ask. It's pointless asking, since I can smell his fear and nervousness. He winces and pulls away from my touch. I furrow my brows.
"I'm okay, Scott," he mumbles.
"How do you know my name?" I ask curiously.
"Jackson," he whispers.
I sigh. "So he told you about Hale?" I ask. He nods. "He's harmless, unless he feels threatened. Even then, he only attacks if he has a legitimate reason to. You don't need to be afraid."
He shies away from me, ducking past me. "I'm sorry," he mutters quietly.
I sigh sadly. Derek's gonna be pissed with me. At least nobody knows I'm a werewolf too. I have enough trouble getting people to trust me because of Derek, they would completely avoid me if they knew I was one of them.
I decide to wait till I get to Derek's place before telling him about Stiles being afraid of me.
•••
After school, I decided to go to the mall a town over. That way I can prolong telling him the news for a couple hours. There's no telling how he'd react.
I grabbed some pizza on the way back and made my way to Derek's house. I make it to his place and let myself in. He usually leaves it unlocked after school in case I decide to stop by.
I place the pizza on the table before walking to the front door, about to lock it. "I brought food!" I yell, locking the door.
Suddenly, I'm flipped around and shoved into the door. Derek's eyes flicker red and back as he scents my shirt.
"Derek, what the hell?!" I grunt, trying to push him back. "What are you doing?"
He growls, shutting me up. "Who?" He asks sternly.
"Who, what?" I ask gruffly.
He growls authoritatively, slamming me into the door once more. His eyes go red, making me whimper submissively. Damn alpha.
"Don't play coy with me, Scott. The scent, whose is it?" Derek asks.
"Derek, this isn't you. Your wolf is taking over. Control him," I say weakly.
"Just answer the damn question," he demands lowly.
"I can't, because I don't know. How am I supposed to know which scent you're talking about? I ran into a lot of people today. I left town. It happens," I reply sarcastically.
Derek growls once again. I wince, muttering an apology. Suddenly, he pulls away as if I'm toxic. His grip on my shirt loosens and he backs up, fear evident in his scent.
"Shit," he mutters. He clears his throat, turning away from me. Almost instantly, he acts like nothing happened and walks towards the kitchen. He opens the pizza box and pulls out a slice. "Where's Isaac, Erica, and Boyd?"
Wow, not even an apology? Well, what should I expect? It's Derek Hale.
I clear my throat, pulling out a slice too. "Don't know. But there's something I've gotta tell you. And you won't like it." He raises a brow at me expectantly. "Stiles is friends with Jackson Whittemore."
"Who?" He asks.
"The guy who spread the rumors of how dangerous you are?" I remind him.
He growls lowly. "So Stiles is afraid of me? And you?"
"Yes. But why does it affect you so much?" I ask.
"If he's afraid, he might falsely accuse me of something and his father will arrest me. Don't want that. Would you?" Derek asks rhetorically.
I sigh. This is really fucked up. "So how do we fix this?"
Derek seems to ponder this thought for a couple minutes. He opens up his mouth to speak multiple times, but he would just close it right away.
When he finally spits something out, I'm stunned. "Subtly watch him or listen. When something happens, you could use that knowledge to get on his good side," Derek demands.
"Isn't that kind of invasive?" I ask. His eyes flash red and back, warning me to shut the hell up. I look to the ground. "Got it."
I have no idea why he's acting like this. It's just a new kid. But maybe I'm better off not knowing.
