Ellen's

I hated having to drive between cities. Here I was in my white Ford Fairlane driving along a rather deserted 2-lane road. There was nothing much along this road except some old farms. It was past 9 PM. I had to drive this route three times per week and the trip took close to two hours. There was an eight-lane freeway currently under construction which will have a higher speed limit, but it isn't schedled to be finished for another three years.

It started getting boring real quick, so I turned on the radio. "Twistin' the Night Away" by Sam Cooke was playing. I liked this station. '1220: All Hits All the Time'. They played all of the newer music.  Although my new car radio has the new FM band, which is supposed to sound better, there are no stations in this area using it. Every once in a while I try to see if anything comes in on the FM, but nothing ever does.

I saw a late-night diner called 'Ellen's Fine Diner--Open until 11 PM'. I often passed it, but never bothered stopping in. However, tonight I thought I'd give it a try. There was nobody elese there at the time. I walked in and ordered a coffee, and then dropped a dime on the counter. The freindly saitress said, "Thank you. Coming right up."

When the waitress arrived at the counter with my coffee, I asked her for a ham sandwich.

"Sure", she said in a bubbly voice, "Thirty cents, please."

I dropped two dimes and two nickles on the counter.

After a couple of minutes she brought me a ham on white.

I finished my sandwich and coffee, and then went back to my car to continue my journey home.

I started the car and drove off.  I barely left the diner parking lot when noticed something odd. I was now the only one on the road, and it suddenly became very warm in the car. The temperature increased about 35 degress in a matter of less than a minute. Even though it was only about 40 outside, the car was now about 80 degrees. I also began to loose control of the steering wheel. The car wanted to drive off the road. I struggled to keep on the road, but my car kept drifting to the right. The radio started to emit an annoying buzzing sound. I wanted to try to change the station, but I couldn't take my hands off of the wheel for fear of driving into the ditch.

Then it happened. I lost control of my body, but I was still concious.  I felt my car leave the road, jump the ditch, and drive through some farmer's field. After a few seconds, it felt like I was going down a steep hill, then bang! I hit something, probably the bottom of the hill. I then slowly drifted to sleep.
