Duncan Prescott was waiting outside his wife's hospital room as she was giving birth. He was lost in thought, worried yet excited for another perfect edition to their lovely, normal family. His older son, Bradley, was sitting in a chair playing lego. That day was about as abnormal as it gets in the Prescott family, living in the outskirts of London, England. Their family was perfectly normal, perhaps too normal. Something strange was bound to happen, little did they know it was going to be on this happy day.
Suddenly, a nurse opened the door.
"You can come in now," she said, and Duncan followed.
On the bed laid his wife, Katerina, and the most beautiful baby he'd ever seen. Other than his other son, of course, who was 7 at the moment.
"It's a boy," she said, smiling, with tears in her eyes.
Duncan held his newborn son in his strong arms.
"Welcome to our family, William."
They decided they'd name the baby after Katerina's deceased father, if it were boy.
"We need to do a quick examination to make sure he's perfectly healthy," said a doctor as he took the bundle out of his father's arms.
"He's beautiful, and don't you worry, you'll have him back ASAP."
After some waiting, the doctor came back to the happy yet anxious family.
"We think we've seen something a bit abnormal. It's probably nothing, but I hope you wouldn't mind if we kept him here for a few days. Just for observation." he added quickly.
"Alright," said Katerina wearily. "When can we pick him up?"
"Come in two days around 2 o'clock. Exactly 48 hours from now."
So, exactly 46 hours from then, they arrived back at the hospital, two hours prior to the said time. They decided to show up before the told time, just in case they gave him back early. Katerina then sat up and announced;
"I have to use the lou."
She walked over, feeling antsy, and opened the door, only to find someone hiding behind it. The lady grabbed her mouth so she wouldn't scream. When Katerina turned around, she realized it was the nurse who'd helped her deliver her baby, whom she'd been longing for for days.
"Ma'am, I need to talk to you. This is urgent. Listen, they kept your baby because his brainwaves were abnormal. Something strange is happening, and you need to take your baby and leave. Leave the building, leave the country, leave the continent. Get yourself as far away as possible."
Katerina heard a little whine, looked down and realized her William was in a little cradle.
"Ma'am, if you ever hope to live a normal life, leave. They already have their eyes on this baby."
The nurse ran out of the bathroom.
"Wait! Who?! Who has their eyes on my son?!" Katerina cried as the nurse ran out. She stared into oblivion for a couple minutes, then walked out to the rest of her family carrying her bundle of joy in the small cradle.
"I was thinking," she said, guiding the two confused guys out of the building.
"We should move to America. For a change. A new start."
