I first froze in shock. The voice sounded small and feminine. I turned slowly to face a small girl of about five years old, staring at me. Her eyes were large and teary, her hair was long and black, tied back into ponytails. She wore dark blue leggings and a pink floral long-sleeved blouse. Her mouth was set into a thin line on her petite face. I could feel so many conflicting emotions inside her. A feeling I was very much familiar with.

"Hello dear," I said softly. She made no attempt to move so I tried again.

"My name is Tiana. What's yours?" She remained silent and I noticed how her eyes quickly darted beside me before  resting back on me. The piano. Of course!

"You like the piano? I do too. Why don't you over hear and I teach you something?"     Hesitantly, she took a step towards me.

"Come on. I don't bite," I encouraged her. Slowly, but surely, she eventually reached the stool. I guided her to stand in front of me.

"Do you know 'Twinkle twinkle little star'?" she nodded slowly. I could sense the fear inside her.

"Okay, I'm going to teach you how to play it."

A few minutes later, she had relaxed and could play the tune fluently. She is a very fast learner. I noticed how her eyes lit up as she played her new found piece but I could also see the sadness mixed inside it. How strange!

"Alison," she murmured.

"Pardon?"

"My name is Alison," she repeated. Something twisted inside me but I pushed the feeling aside.

"Well Alison, I like your name. It suits you. Why don't we go downstairs?"

She let me slip my hand into hers and we walked out of the room, closing the door behind us. We trod down the stairs as Mason slowly came into view.

"Well, I see you found my sister. She doesn't talk much," he said as we reached him at the bottom of the stairs. She looked up at him then at me and shot me a small smile.

"I like Tiana. She's nice," she said quietly. She let go of my hand and scurried to the kitchen. Mason raised one brow at me, questioningly. I simply shrugged.

  "I'm good with children."

"She looks happier. What were you two doing?"

"That's a secret between me and her."His eyebrows furrowed slightly but he shook his head dismissing the topic.
