It had been three months since I moved to Detroit. In those three months, I had settled into my new school for my senior year and made two best friends, Ruby and Markos. Ruby was the head cheerleader and Markos was on the foot ball team. I know that in most cases, these people are usually the villains of the story but these guys were different.
I had also met their other friends,Thomas,Leila and gently acquainted with Mason. Mason was the most popular guy in school. His green eyes and black wavy hair had girls running after him in dozens. Despite this, he usually kept to himself and rarely dated. He only smiled slightly when he was with Ruby and the rest but even that was clearly fake. His eyes were always watching silently. He could notice the hidden things very easily and I avoided him for that reason. I couldn't have anyone unmasking me.
I noticed that Ruby and Markos always sat with me at lunch, not with their friends. When I asked, it was simply that they wanted to keep me company. Though I would insist otherwise, they never budged. If they did, all they said was, ''We shall sit with our friends when you get a little more used to the environment.''
I guess that time was today. ''Please, Tiana. Come on. You are the one who said we should sit with our friends more often,'' Ruby whined as we waited in the lunch lines of the cafeteria. ''Yeah. But I didn't ask you to tag me along,'' I replied irritably. ''But we can't leave you behind. Please. Just try it out. '' ''Yeah Tiana,'' Markos jumped in,'' And if you don't like it then we can all move back and never bring up the topic again.'' ''Well, I guess if that's the case....'' I mumbled. ''Is that a yes?'' Ruby asked eagerly. ''Fine!'' I rolled my eyes at them both as they clapped with glee. It was fun being a normal teenager, even if it was just for a little while, but I can't let myself get carried away. Never again. We walked over to the lunch table where the rest where already seated.
Markos and Ruby sat leaving the only free space between Thomas and....Mason. Sucking in a deep breath, I sat as my eyes met each face. They all wore warm welcoming smiles she for Mason. He barely glanced up even when I said hi. If that's how he was going to play it then so me it. I sat through my lunch ignoring the sulking hunk beside me.
