Chapter 5
Shailey
Coo-coo! Coo-coo! Coo-coo!
I slowly open my eyes to the sound of my Coo-coo clock hanging above the mantel, on the opposite end of the room. For a second I am confused at what I am doing up so early. 6:00am???
I am suddenly wide awake as I jump out of bed. It is my first day of high school! I stop short. What am I going to wear? What do I need to bring? When does the bus get here? Wait the bus? I feel a slight panic start to rise as I rush over to my closet. I have never taken the bus before. Is it like in the movies where there are social statuses on the bus? What if I sit in the wrong section, or take someone's seat?!
"Calm down and focus on the task at hand. Things will work out" I was to myself with feigned confidence.
It is still fairly hot outside, even if it was already September, then again I am in a completely new place and the weather here is very different from back home. I also don't know the fashion here; I think I will just go on the more casual side, but still nice for my first day. Five minutes later I choose my blue jean shorts, with a lacy white tank top over a plain blue one. I quickly pull my hair up into a half updo and delicately clasp on my ship necklace. I add some little blue earrings and pick out a little sweater to throw in my bag, just in case I get cold. As I head down the spiral stairs, I can faintly hear my mom singing to herself as she prepares the breakfast. As I come into the main part of the house, I can smell the delicious smell of French toast. I smile. My mom always makes French toast for us when it's a special day.
"Good morning mama," I say as I step into the kitchen and start to set the table for breakfast.
"Good morning sweetie. How was your sleep?" She asks as she flips the toast.
"It was good, although it feels like I only slept for an hour, because I am nervous and excited for school today." I say from the dinning room. "How was yours?"
"Oh I slept like I was knocked out," my father says walking into the room and pouring himself a cup a coffee. He gives my mom a quick kiss on the cheek and steals a raspberry from the bowl in my hand.
"Good morning papa," I say as I swat his hand away from the bowl. "You know those are for breakfast."
"Oh, really?" he says, taking another one.
I just shake my head and take the rest of the things to the table. I sit down just as my mom brings all three dishes skillfully into the dinning room, setting them in front of us.

I grab my bag and my sandals as I head out the door. I decide to take the short cut across the beach to get to where the bus will be arriving. I am so excited that I start to run along the beach. The wind rushes towards me as I quickly reach the trail head and the big sandy stairs that lead up to the road. I jog up the quickly and look for the bus stop. The first thing I see is a couple kids standing around that look about my age, so I dust off my feet and slip on my shoes.
There are about five other people here. There is a trio, two girls and a boy that are huddled around someone else, whom I cannot see and then there's Jenna! I rush over to her with a sigh of relief. I definitely did not want to ride the bus by myself.
"Shailey! Hi, I didn't know you lived around here. Thank goodness too, because I hate taking the bus by myself." She says as I walk up to her. She looks over her shoulder at the other group. "I'm still saving up for my own car, so I won't have to take this dreadful thing anymore. Especially with them."
