Chapter 2

Shailey

As it turns out, the restaurant is only a small beach walk away, and it's a perfect evening for a walk along the shore. The sun was just about down, casting a warm glow along the horizon of the ocean. I walk barefoot in the sand between my parents, knowing how lucky I am to have them in my life.

I let out a sigh of happiness, then remember where we are going and get a rush of calm excitement. I cast my glance upward, trying to find the restaurant. The only thing I see is large beach houses and one small one. As we get closer I realize that the small house doesn't look like a regular beach house, yet at the same time it does. It's a cute little log house with windows all over and a homey feel to it. I realize that it has been the only thing so far that could be considered a restaurant and it doesn't look like there could be anything else up ahead, unless it was further up the trail. I ask anyways to confirm it.

  "Is that the restaurant?"

I look back at my parents, having sped up a bit and am now in front of them, to see them both smiling. I immediately knew that my feeling had been correct.

I cast my glance back at the restaurant, which is now only a couple meters away.

My dad starts ranting off about how great this restaurant is; it has amazing views, terrific interior, friendly staff...

I tune out and study it. The closer we got, the more detail I could make out. There is so much to look at. There is a big sandy wooden staircase leading up to the restaurant with swirly driftwood railing. A huge window takes up the front of the small building, giving a person, as my dad pointed out, a wide view of the beach and ocean.

At the foot of the staircase, I rub the sand off my feet and slip on my flats. At the top, I feel the wind getting slightly stronger. It blew my scarlet hair out off my face, which is nice because it's always in the way. I stop and briefly look at the view. I don't think I could ever get used to how beautiful it is; the bluest water, almost turquoise and so much sand. I realize that there is music playing. It sounds like a soft yet strange Celtic melody accompanied by a flowing and almost eerie female voice. I strain to hear the words she is singing, only to realize she is singing in a different language. Most likely Celtic. Still, it sent a shiver through my body, even though the evening is still fairly warm.

My parents, who just finished climbing the many stairs, come up behind me and lead the way  into the restaurant. The voice becomes one with the melody and fills the room with its hauntingly beautiful unearthly presence. The interior is gorgeous. There were different species of plants suspended from the roof and in pots on the floor everywhere around the room. It had the sweet aroma of lavender mixed with food and a peaceful and homey feel, despite the eerie singing.

"Shai..?"My dad asks, looking at me expectantly.

"Oh, I'm so sorry I didn't hear what you asked. Do you mind repeating yourself please?" I feel slightly embarrassed for not hearing him and bit my lip while letting a small grin slip passed.

He only laughed and smiled.

"I asked if you wanted to choose which table you would like take your supper at, since it's your last evening before you have to start public high school" He repeats.

"I would love to papa, thank you." I scan the room with my scrutinizing eyes. Despite the soft eerie feeling the melodies left behind, the room has a mellifluous sentiment to it. There are only three other people in the restaurant other than my parents and myself; there are two girls and one boy, all three looking around my age. They are seated at a rounded table near the back of the room, looking out on the ocean. There are three tables back there.
