Part 2

Morning of Teej

Naksh has come to Goenka house to give Vedika the shagun. Kairav comes down stairs with Naira and Kartik. Kairav looks at Naksh and Vedika and being the curious child that he is quickly questions Naksh.

Kairav- Mamu, what are you giving to Vedika Aunty?

Naksh- Beta, its shagun, today is teej right? So, every bother must give his sister some gifts so that she has a good life and the strength to fast (Sorry if this was wrong, I am not aware of the exact traditions!)

Kairav- Then why did you give Vedika Aunty? You should give it to Mumma, na? She is your sister, not Vedika Aunty.

Naksh got a little flustered, but brushed Kairav's question of as a joke and continued the rituals with Vedika.

Naira who was being strong for her son all this while, somewhere broke inside and that showed with a small tear that escaped from her eyes. Nobody noticed her inner turmoil and pain that she felt, nobody except, her Mendak of course.

He realized what his sherni was going through and felt internally helpless and guilty. He was also really upset at Naksh for pulling such a stupid and distasteful act.

Kairav was then distracted by Vansh who called him to play video games. He went down and disappeared with Vansh in the TV room.

Naira who could feel her tears ready to spill, whispered to kartik, that she was going upstairs to sort out Kairav's medicines. Kartik who caught a glimpse of her eyes as she rushed upstairs, immediately realized that she was about to break down.

Kartik tried to follow Naira upstairs, when he was halted by Dadi's voice.

KD- Arre Kittu, wait, come stand next to Ve..

Before she could even finish, Kartik turned and looked at her so sternly she felt a little shudder and didn't even have the courage to complete her sentence.

Vedika looked at Kartik's face and realization finally struck, she understood that no matter what Kartik will always only have Naira in mind. No one will ever be able to even come close to Naira's position in Kartik's life.

Kartik continued going up and started looking for Naira, to find her in Kairav's room, standing against the window, secretly wiping her tears. He entered the room and locked the door from inside to stop anyone from disturbing them today.

K- Kiss se aansu chupa rahi ho? 

N- Mein ro nahi rahi hoon.

K- Really, Naira, why do you even try to lie to me?

N- Kartik, please just leave me alone. Please go down and stay with your wi.. wi.. Please go and be with Vedika.

Kartik, had enough at this point! He could not even believe that Naira could be like this. How was she so selfless and stupid that she was telling him to go and be with a woman he does not even care about! He waked over to her, grabbed her arm and turned her to him.

K- Sure ill go! Ill leave right now, but just once tell me what do you feel for me Naira! Because I can see it in your eyes, I just need you to say it to me once! And if you can't do that at least tell me what you think my relationship with Vedika is & why are you stuttering when you try to say it.

N- Kartik, I can't keep this up, please stop it! I can't always be strong, I try but I can't!

Kartik could see she was finally letting go of that strong exterior of a mother and was turning into his Naira, who could be vulnerable in his arms.

K- Naira, what is going on! Just talk to me please! You say, you want to be away from me, you are angry but every year for the past 5 years, you fasted for me! You try and stay away but I can see that it kills you to see Vedika by my side, trying to take your place.

N- No, it is not like that! I Don't....

K- Shhhh, I was not asking you I was telling you because no matter what happens I can always see through you Naira! How Naira, how have we become so distant!

N- one wrong question, one very bad decision and now one major responsibility. That's how we have become so distant Kartik!

Kartik's heart could not take anymore, he just let go of his ego, his anger and just poured out all his feelings to his wife.

K- I know, I know, and we are both at fault! What I did by not trusting you, by asking you that dreadful question was very very wrong, and I can understand your reaction as a wife who felt betrayed. But as a mother what you did was completely wrong Naira, you not only deprived me of 5 years from Kairav's life, but you also deprived Kairav!  There are a lot of things that have gone wrong Naira and they will not get solved in a jiffy, but we need to talk this out Naira, because I have said it once and I'm saying it again, tumhari nafrat bardash hai mujhe, tumhari doori nahi!

Naira looked at Kartik, and for the first tie in his eyes she saw her husband, her mendak, her Kartik! For the first time, in a very long, she was ready to let go of everything, guilt, responsibility, anger, ego, just to be in his arms and listen to his feelings and tell him what she felt.
