Chapter 5

The phone rings disturbing my sleep. I shuffle to check who is calling me at this hour of the night. Its f*cking Liam. The arrogant prick must be high and just calling to annoy me. I ignore his call and get back to bed. But I couldn't get back to sleep. I have a job. I need to be up early to deliver newspapers but this rich prick will not understand what it is like to earn a living. Probably none of my friends will understand because all of them are wealthy.

My dad owns a small construction company which does remodeling works. The money is tight but we get by. When I was little, I couldn't understand why we didn't live in a fancy mansion or not get invited to fancy parties but I soon learnt we were not rich and the wealthy didn't accept me in their circle except for few of my friends.

Dean is one of them. He was the first friend I made and we are best friends still. Even though the guy came from money he is the most down to earth person I have met. Then there is Beth.

If our town was a fairy tale, then Bethany was the oh-so-fair princess every bastard had his eye on. She got the best of the gene pool in both looks and personality. When my hormones kicked in, she became the object of my fantasies. I noticed her beautiful smile, musical laugh, radiant skin, silky hair and tempting body. I also noticed her fall in love with Dean and knew I didn't have a chance.

I remember the day Dean told me about the girl he met at Liam's party. He said she was the prettiest girl he has ever seen. When Beth joined our class a few days later, Dean declared she was his friend since he kissed her first. He had called dibs on her at the age of 6. And it became a norm. Dean and Beth were inseparable and so everyone thought they will ultimately end up together. Then Sherley appeared in Dean's life and everything changed.

I never liked that girl. Sherley is not a bad person but she has this holier than thou attitude which gets to my nerves. Even though she talks big, she is self-centered and overbearing. why Dean is so in love with her is beyond me.

When I realized that Beth was in love with Dean, I stepped back and overcame my feelings for her. But still, it was difficult watching her struggle when Dean and Beth got together. Their unstable relationship is breaking Beth even more than its hurting them. I just wish that Beth gets over Dean and go back to being the girl full of life.

My phone dings with a series of incoming texts. Why is everyone so active at these late hours of the night? I sigh and wake up to check the texts.
There is more than 50 messages in under 2 minutes. I scroll to the top and read the first text from Liam

Flash New: Shreley caught Dean red-handed in bed with Beth. Beth. HOT

Shit!, I immediately dial Beth and she doesn't pick my call. I get a bad feeling about it. I next dial Liam, the Asshole.

"What is going on?", I bark at him and he recounts everything.

" Make yourself scarce. I will kick your ass when I see you next", I warn him and end the call. I pace the room for a minute but I can't get rid of the feeling that something is terribly wrong. So I call Dean.

"Where are you?"

"I just got engaged to Sherley", he says cheerful and my panic increases. I congratulate him quickly and end the call. I move the drapes to check if my brother is home. We share a car since Dean and I go to school together in his. The car is not in the driveway. I plop back on the bed and wonder if I am overreacting. I decide its better to be cautious than sorry. So I call Suraya.

Suraya is Beth's best friend. She picks my call and sleepily grunts,

" What?"

I explain to her what Liam told and how Dean is engaged. She agrees that it's better we check on Beth. Within 10 minutes, she comes to pick me up.
