Entering Beach City (y/n) held her arms out, sort of as a way of telling the world to hit her with whatever it wanted. She seemed like an outgoing girl, a bright look in her eyes; she looked really happy to have someone to spend time with.

Walking backwards and gesturing her hand for Spinel to walk with her she said:

"Now I only moved here a couple of weeks ago. I don't get out much, so I don't know about a lot of places around here... What I'm saying is, forgive me if I'm not that fun."

Spinel put her hands up in front of her and shook them slightly. There was no way this girl had to apologize for anything. It actually really meant something to her that someone wanted to be with her— instead of being alone.

"No no, you're not doing anything wrong. Believe me, I do a lot of things wrong, so, really I should be saying that to you."

Giving a nervous smile Spinel rubbed at her upper arm. She was trying to think of a joke to tell, but couldn't think of anything.

"Oh it's okay. You seem nice to me."

Forgetting to ask for Spinel's name, (y/n) paused and asked:

"What's your name, anyway?"

Feeling a bit awkward, Spinel replied with:

"Uh, Spinel... It's nice to meet you."

Giggling (y/n) gave a peace sign with her hand. Her cheerfulness made Spinel both nervous and at ease.

"It's nice to meet you too, Spinel. Come on, lets go."

Turning to continue on with their "hang out" (y/n) then paused, turned around, and offered her hand to Spinel with a smile.

Spinel almost flinched. Why would she want to hold hands with her? She stared down at (y/n)'s hand for several long seconds. With great hesitation, she took her hand. When she did, (y/n) tugged Spinel a lot closer beside her, smiling brightly. Spinel blushed and looked off to the side.

"Hey, you alright?"

(Y/n) asked, genuine care in her voice. Obvious to what Spinel was feeling.

"Y-Yes I'm fine! L-Let's go."

(Y/n) chuckled a bit. It was easy to tell she liked Spinel, however in what way wasn't known yet.

Pulling Spinel along, (y/n) looked around for which place would be best. Eventually they came to "Dewey Park". There were almost no people there. Visibly happy, (y/n) pointed out and said:

"I love parks! I would go to them back at my home town! Let's go!"

Feeling a bit frazzled, Spinel followed (y/n) into the park. She was almost too hyper for her to keep up. Maybe not for the old her, but not now. There was something about her, however, it made her feel a tightness in her chest. It wasn't like how she felt about the Diamonds, this was different. She didn't understand.

Sitting the two of them down in some grass they continued to hold each other's hands. Spinel seemed to be afraid to look at (y/n). She looked embarrassed, and shy. Seeing this, (y/n) said:

"Hey, look over here for a second."

When Spinel looked over (y/n) made the funniest, weirdest face she could manage. Then ended up cracking herself up, squeezing the others hand as she laughed. It took Spinel by surprise, the face (y/n) made, but soon after she too laughed, it was just the thing to make her more comfortable. Still laughing, Spinel said:

"Wow, you really got me..."

She wiped a tear from her eye.

"Normally I'm making people laugh, or, at least I try to."

Pausing she looked down, then back up at (y/n) with a smile and said:

"You wanna see mine?"

(Y/n) nodded, excited to see what she would do, so Spinel, using her stretching powers, stretched into a wild, crazy funny face like (y/n) had never seen. Amazed, instead of laughing, she clapped and excitedly said to her:

"Wow! That's amazing! You're so amazing Spinel!!"

Stretching back to her normal form, Spinel's face turned a deep shade of pink. Did she really mean that? What should she say? How would she respond to that?

"Th-Thank you... uhm..."

Rubbing at her cheek she thought more of what to say. She wasn't used to compliments. Before Pink Diamond left her, all those years ago, she was always the one giving her admiration and laughter. It was weird the other way around.

(Y/n) saw that Spinel seemed a bit-- uneasy, making her nudge her with her hand and giggle. When she did Spinel flinched but quickly calmed down when she saw there was no threat. This worried (y/n), causing her to lean in a lot closer with a good-natured expression, and say:

"Hey, is something wrong? You can tell me if there is."

Spinel blushed hard. This girl was almost-- dream like. She didn't understand what made her care about her, but the more she cared, it made her want to cling to her.

"Uhm... there's nothing wrong... I-I promise..."

She felt herself leaning in closer, feeling a yearning for something. Only to lead to:

"That's great. You know, before I moved here, I went to the park there. There was this big creek that I would sit by and read my favorite books... It was so peaceful."

Oblivious, (y/n) turned away and spoke like nothing was happening, talking to Spinel casually. She did, however, place her hand over hers, implying that it was okay for them to hold hands again.

When (y/n) turned away Spinel shot up to an upright sitting position. What was she doing? She looked at the other, and when she put her hand over her own she stared down at it for a second, she was too scared to do anything. Finally realizing that (y/n) was talking, Spinel only got the tail end of it, but tried her best to respond.

"What... do you like to read?"

(Y/n) turned to Spinel with a smile. She really appeared to be happy to have her around, and almost completely unknowing of what she was thinking.

"Comics mostly... I know its kinda dorky, but I like them! I like the scary ones. The ones that really freak you out."

Spinel tried to smile, it was getting easier.

"That's cool... I don't read much. I mostly, uhm..."

Thinking of the things she did reminded her of her traumatic past. With those thoughts going through her head, her expression contorted into a really painful and sorrowful one. Seeing this, (y/n) attempted to put her arm around her shoulders and hold onto her.

"Hey hey... okay now I know something is wrong... Come on, tell me. --Unless it's a really touchy subject, then I can understand..."

Spinel interrupted her. Tears formed in her eyes, not yet falling.

"It's-It's just-- I'm not a really fun person... at least not anymore. I don't get why you wanna spend time with me. Don't you have other things to do? Someone else to be with? You're just going to leave me..."

(Y/n)'s expression turned serious, she looked down. Then she hugged Spinel tightly. She held her for a minute or longer, staying silent. When she finally spoke, she said:

"I'm not going to leave you... The truth is... you're the first person I've spent time with since I've been here. I don't have any friends, and I haven't for a while. I don't know why... but you're... comforting for me... You remind me of the best friend I never had. Even if we just met, I really like you. I'm sorry but..."

Tears fell down Spinel's face before she squeezed onto (y/n) in return. "Best friend"?

"(Y/n)..."

With a melancholy face, (y/n) pulled up enough for them to see each other. Then, she placed her hands onto Spinel's cheeks, and softly kissed her.
