My second day upon returning back to my hometown was to visit my childhood friend, Cassidy, at her house. She had stayed in state to go to a college nearby, so she had already arrived at home about a week ago.
It was a fresh day, and although the sight of what happened last night itched at my brain, I still practically skipped to Cassidy's house a couple blocks down from where I live. At this point, I had convinced myself that what I saw last night wasn't real, and that these Tape Face stories had been getting to my head. I noticed that Michael almost seemed to be obsessed with Tape Face. He was the one who knew most of the Tape Face stories and wouldn't shut up about him, which I didn't really mind. Sammy just joined for the ride, for she really looked up to her older brother and wanted to please him in every possible way. Even if I could tell she was terrified of Tape Face. I was proud of how well Sammy and Michael got along together, and was glad that they still let me join in on their games of pretend.
When I got to her house, we both exchanged some excited squeals of joy upon seeing one another after a while, and hugged each other. Even though we hadn't seen each other for almost a year, it was like we never parted. We started right where we left off, and I practically died of laughter at her silly remarks and funny stories. Cassidy for sure was a storyteller, and always had a sort of light whenever she told a tale. It wasn't too long before she brought up Tape Face, which I had expected considering Michael mentioned she had a story on Tape Face.
"So, my guess is your siblings have already told you about Tape Face?" She seemed to state it more than question it, laying on her bed as she took a bite of a potato chip from the snack bowl.
I took one myself before answering, "Yeah. They won't stop talking about him. It's so weird being gone and coming back to all of this."
"I bet," Cassidy responded, eyebrows raising.
I squinted my eyes in confusion, "I am just so confused. Is he real? Where did he come from?"
"Oh he's real all right. And no one knows," Cassidy replied. "He appeared about a week ago, a couple days after I came home. Almost everyone in town has seen him. But all he has been is trouble."
"How so?" I asked.
"Well, for one, he can travel through shadows. Which is how he sneaks up on his victims. And he always uses strange objects to murder his victims. This one time, I saw a boy walking home and Tape Face appeared behind him and used white oven mitts to suffocate him. When his body fell limp, Tape Face dragged it into the shadows and the boy was never to be seen again. The only evidence of the boy left was the now blood stained oven mitts."
I raised an eyebrow, remembering that my brother had mentioned that the boy had been choked, not suffocated, but I shook it off. Instead, I asked questioningly, "Are you sure that is true?"
Cassidy looked at me and shrugged, "You know what my major is. But I'll let you decide on the truth." I pouted in response at her lack of response in a teasing way.
For the next couple of hours, Cassidy told me more stories of evil deeds that Tape Face had done, and I began to feel more uneasy about the mysterious character wandering around town.
