Chapter Six:
We Were All Meant To Die, Weren't We?
Julian and Deva stayed within the confines of the closet the rest of the night and most of the next day, huddled together and hoping that whatever lay out there waiting for them was harmless, and that the troubles of yesterday had somehow passed. Julian was the one to make the decision of getting out, letting go of Deva's huddled form and making his was slowly towards the door.
"Don't go out there," Deva whispered, but followed after him anyway, afraid of being left alone and defenseless. Julian would fight - could fight - to defend himself, but Deva was much weaker. The fights she usually had were battles of social standards and latter's. Nothing physical for her, and at the moment she regretted never having gone to the gym to tone herself or to get some sort of training. She felt like a deer at that point, walking in the woods, unknowing of what lay ahead of her.
Julian noticed the fear, just as he opened the door, and reached out to take her hand. She took it like she would've taken a lifesaver had she been drowning. It almost was like drowning, the water being the crushing fear that wouldn't leave her and Julian... he was her way out. "Just hold on, alright? If something scares you, just squeeze. We don't want to make to much noise in case..." he left his sentence unfinished, knowing Deva had enough sense to connect the dots.
In case there's a virus infected killer still on the loose.
Deva nodded in silent understanding and Julian took it as his signal to open the door. The stepped forward and took in what only looked like a war zone. The foyer, which had only had a few stains of blood when they'd approached it a day earlier - not counting the chopped up body - was now wrecked. Tables that Julian remembered seeing gamers sitting at were broken, turned over or otherwise vandalized somehow. The only one still standing held a body slumped over it, and they, luckily enough, did not have a spec of blood on them.
The rest of the room though.... There had to be three bodies, counting the one on the table, excluding the chopped up one in the hallway. The other two in the foyer were... gruesome. Julian caught sight of them first and so turned his body right away blocking off Deva and forcing her to look his shirt, the logo of "It's All Fun And Games Until Someone Loses A Wiener" stained with tears and blood. Deva didn't protest but merely turned the other way, her hand still in his.
They walked down the hallway where the chopped up body was and, thankfully, Deva stayed fine, her eyes anywhere but on the ground while Julian was careful to keep them away from it and prevent the two of them from stepping on any of the remains. Julian looked through every room, Deva keeping a lookout from the hallway as he searched for any threats. Then the stepped into the second foyer. This one only held one body, which lay on the floor. Julian could see immediately that they were dead just by the way their glazed over eyes stared up at nothing in particular. Deva shivered beside him but said nothing.
Next was the kitchen, half the size of the second foyer and the divider of the second and third foyer. This time, Deva did almost scream, a low keening escaping her lips before Julian could pull her back against him. Her body trembled against him as he looked over the scene. It was worse than what they'd seen in the foyer; two bodies, one stabbed right in their heart with a large kitchen knife, eyes staring up blankly at the ceiling. The other was propped against a counter, a pair of scissors inserted in their carotid. The blood had long since dried up but even so it was too much. The sight itself was too much. Julian held Deva to his chest as he sidestepped the bodies, making sure both of them avoided touching either of the bodies.
The last foyer held no bodies. Nothing at all told of the chaos that had gone down yesterday. Julian let his hand fall from Deva's eyes then, his hand still tight around hers. "I guess no one thought to come into here," Deva said softly, her wariness of the mansion not completely gone. Julian nodded lightly, and tugged on her hand so they could go outside. "Wait, shouldn't we check the other levels?"
