rhys has always liked last words.

it's pretty morbid, he knows, but something about them just.. grips the imagination. those are the words these people chose to spend their last breath on sharing with the world. "nineteen whiskies, i think that's the record!" is always quite a funny one to remember, and he takes great joy in repeating that to kels whenever they go out for drinks. the jefferson-john adams last words are rather interesting, considering the uncertainty over whether those are actually their last words or not.

but the one that sticks in his head? of course, it's more morbid than most- rhys' dark that way, surprisingly. you'd've thought kevin'd be the doom-and-gloom one, with all his plans for defeating strex, and that, but in fact the guy's a constant ray of sunshine- rhys' got no clue how he does that continuely, like- rhys isnt exactly a pessimist but he sure as all fuck wouldn't be able to hold his composure that long- aaaand he's offtopic. hard to think when you're out of your mind-drunk, huh? what a surprise. anyway, the quote.

"how will we ever get out of this labyrinth of suffering?"

it strikes a chord with him, especially now. how will we? surely, surely, the nature of humans is to cling to life, to survive- to cling to the labyrinth, in other words. to make a cosy little shelter in some corner and pretend its home- make-believe you aren't surrounded by suffering, and loss, and pain. some people see through this- see how everyone's trapped, secure in their self-suficcient hideaways and perfectly content to give up.

because humans are cowards, are they not? it is within their nature to shy from which is not known- death, in this case, and so they stay. the hell you know is better than the heaven you don't, is the traditional human opinion. but rhys knows how to escape. straight and fast.

rhys's fingers tighten on the steering wheel, shaking. he doesn't have time for this semi-coherent rambling- he barely has a second, what the fuck is he doing.

kevin's favourite last words are "it's very beautiful over there.". robin frost's, rhys believes. his boyfriend's inquisitive nature piqued at this- what was beautiful? heaven? something else? he'd stare at rhys like a puppy, seemingly expecting him to know the answer.

"the exit to the labyrinth, my darling." he says out loud to the empty air, addressing nobody at all. a tear tracks down his face, blank and devoid of any other emotion but pain. he's addressing nobody. kevin is gone. and there's no use thinking it over any more.

rhys slams his foot down on the accelerator, closing his eyes. straight and fast, straight and fast, straight and-

"it's very beautiful over there."
