“…What?”  Riker asked me.  I shook my head and put my face back in my hands.

“Please don’t make me repeat myself Riker,” I whispered.

“I didn’t know she was being abused,” he said in disbelief.

“I didn’t either until about a week ago.  Her dad was always a little bit mean, but never this bad,” I replied.

Riker hit play on the video and I had to plug my ears.  I couldn’t take watching or listening to the cruelty my best friend had to endure.  It’s a good thing I went in to ask her a question.  I saw them talking and I didn’t want to interrupt, but as soon as I saw the anger on his face, I knew something was going to happen, so I recorded as the scene unfolded.

Riker’s hand on my shoulder shook me out of my thoughts as he handed my phone back to me and I unplugged my ears.  I bit my lip as I continued to look into my lap.

“What do I do?  We’re best friends.  I need to do something!” I cried.  Riker ran his hand through his hair then set it on my thigh, rubbing his thumb over it gently.

“McKenna, first of all you need to calm down.  Everything’s gonna be okay, okay?  And you’re right, you’re best friends.  So you need to be there for her in this time of need.  Obviously this is a lot to take in not only for you but for her also.  And about that video.  You need to turn it into the police.  That’s child abuse.  He can go to jail and completely be out of the picture for the both of you,” he advised.

I nodded my head and wiped another tear.

“Thanks Riker.  And I’ll turn in the video, but can I wait for her to get home?  I want her to actually know what’s going on.  It’d freak her out if she came home from her first date with police cars on her front lawn,” I said with a little laugh to lighten up the mood.  Riker just looked at me before embracing me in a tight hug that made me gasp a bit.

“You’re very brave, ya know that?” he murmured into my neck.  I shook my head and wrapped my arms around his waist while burying my head into the crook of his neck.

Addisyn’s P.O.V

“We’re here!!” Ross screeched as he slammed on the breaks.  I slowly opened my eyes one by one and let go of the safety handle, turning to him with probably a terrified look on my face.  This kid really needed to learn how to drive.  He hopped out of the car and hurried to my side, opening it before I could.  I had to carefully place my foot on the ground, because it still hurt like hell, and the brace wasn’t working at all.  When I finally got out, Ross had already went to the trunk and pulled out a picnic basket, and then he got back to me and held his arm out, which I gladly linked with my own, and barely limped down to wherever we were going.

I gasped as I looked at the sight before me.  We were at a beautiful private beach and the sun was beautifully setting in the horizon.  I turned to Ross and looked at his gorgeous smile growing on his lips.

“Ross you didn’t have to do this for me,” I told him.  His arm tightened a little and he looked down at me with a smile.

“Oh I know.  But you’re worth it,” he said.  I felt my cheeks heat up as I put my head down, but I couldn’t help but feel really happy at his words.  They kept repeating in my head.  You’re worth it.  It was literally the sweetest thing I ever heard.

Ross suddenly stopped in his tracks and released my arm from his tight grip.  He spread a light blue blanket across the sand and sat down, patting the spot next to him for me to sit down.  I carefully lowered myself onto the blanket as Ross got out some food.
